Overview

This is a hybrid role – 2 days remote and 3 days in the Malvern, PA office. CubeSmart is currently seeking a Lead Software Engineer to join the Information Technology team at our corporate office in Malvern, PA. The Lead Software Engineer will be responsible for the technical innovation and leadership of CubeSmart’s enterprise store operating platform.

Responsibilities

Working in collaboration with the hosting and infrastructure teams, this role will own the technical delivery of the application, from requirements to successful delivery into production and then managing and enhancing it to ensure a seamless customer, team member and partner experience. This teammate will adopt an agile yet stable and secure approach to development leveraging core engineering principles and develop a culture of high performance, urgency, and productivity. The Lead Software Engineer is expected to have proven experience in building and delivering highly complex platform and strong technical background, and experience with modern technologies and leveraging best practices in the areas of open source tech solutions, and managing software development and agile methodologies. In addition, working with the Manager of Software Engineering, this leader will build and lead a highly technical team of developers and engineers.

  • Completely own the technical delivery of the application stack; translate complex functional specifications to detailed technical designs regarding test cases, security, testing automation, user interfaces, application functionality, middleware technologies, API, deployment artifacts, artifact packaging, and application monitoring automation, logging, and performance metrics.
  • Serve as the strategist who researches technologies and frameworks, and creates reference implementations for the team members to follow.
  • Lead sprint planning meetings, author specific stories, plan and lead spikes to ensure that the team understands their objectives and has committed to completing their work on an agreed‑upon timeline.
  • Own the development environment, development tooling strategy and toolchains for effective and efficient delivery of software in support of the chosen methodologies.
  • Create detailed design, perform pull request reviews, and mentor the team on coding best practices.
  • Adopt a product mentality and define goals, consider trade‑offs, prioritize, drive decisions, and execute on them.
  • Act as a servant‑leader to the team, actively working towards team goals and success.
  • Demonstrate dedication to support the high‑availability mission‑critical platform during off‑hours and holidays as needed.
Qualifications
  • Demonstrated affinity for continuous learning specifically in the technology domain and how to leverage it for building great reliable products.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent related technical field.
  • At least 10+ years’ experience building, leading, managing and supporting omni‑channel commerce platforms using current and emerging technology stacks.
  • Experience leading development teams, building roadmaps, and adopting principles and standards in the design, development, and delivery of solutions.
  • Experience with DevOps and working with Infrastructure as Code environments.
  • Proficient in programming languages such as Ruby (Rails), C# .NET, Python, Java, JavaScript, Node.js, Rust, etc.
  • Proficient in databases like MongoDB, PostgreSQL, Oracle, SQL Server, DB2, etc.
  • Proficient in concepts around RESTful API services and interfaces.
  • Experience with endpoint protocols and security components (SFTP/FTP, File, OAuth1/2, OIDC, TLS, SSH, etc.).
  • Demonstrated experience with either Test‑Driven or Behavior‑Driven development, with a clear understanding of the tool stack, unit testing, integration, smoke and regression testing suites, code coverage, and pipeline setup.
  • Experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines.
  • Experience using a project management/ticketing tool such as JIRA or Azure DevOps.
  • Experience building cloud‑native applications on any one cloud, preferably AWS, asynchronous communication patterns such as RabbitMQ/Kafka, caching via Redis, Memcached, Hazelcast, etc., and AWS deployments and services.
  • Experience with observability and monitoring using modern tools and systems.
  • Service‑oriented leader who possesses a true 24×7 support and service mentality.
  • The ability to build relationships with stakeholders, help others grow in their careers, and create inclusive environments.
Additional Preferred Qualifications
  • Hands‑on experience with designing, building, and supporting microservices in a hybrid cloud environment.
  • Experience building containerized applications using GitOps, Kubernetes, Service Mesh, Kubernetes operators.
  • AWS Solution Architect or other certifications.
  • Professional experience with cloud development on GCP, Azure, Heroku.
