Job summary

Transamerica is seeking a Lead Software Engineer to architect and deliver cloud-based application solutions using Java, Spring, microservices, and REST APIs. You will lead design sessions, mentor engineers, and coordinate with offshore teams in an agile setting.

The role requires deep experience with AWS, DevOps tooling, and modern frontend frameworks, with a hybrid in-office schedule across hub locations in the US.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, math, engineering, or other technical field, or equivalent education/experience.
  • Five years of Core Java expertise in coding platforms/frameworks (e.g. JAVA, OOD, OOP, Functional Programming, Spring Framework, J2EE, SOA, DI, Core Architecture).
  • Three years of experience and expertise in database design techniques and philosophies (RDBMS, Document, Star Schema, Kimball Model).
  • Understanding of NoSQL database technologies (MS Cosmos DB, Cassandra, DynamoDB).
  • Four years of development experience with cloud services (AWS) and related tools (EC2, ECS, S3, Kinesis, VMs, Cosmos, Data Factory, Data Warehouse, ARM Templates, Event Hubs).
  • Experience with build/deploy tools (Visual Studio, Git/Bitbucket, Maven, Jenkins, Nexus, SSMS, Nunit, Ajax).
  • Experience in API Gateways, Swagger, Kafka, microservices, and CI/CD with containers (Docker, Kubernetes, OpenShift).
  • Frontend familiarity (Angular, React, Vue.js) and strong communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Lead design and development for one or more application teams; mentor engineers and drive end-to-end solutions.
  • Collaborate with offshore engineers and product owners in an agile environment and lead architecture sessions.
  • Evaluate solutions balancing cost, business needs, and system impact; guide CI/CD and deployment strategies.
  • Lead web development staff, including offshore resources, and stay current with new technologies.

Job Description Summary

The Lead Software Engineer utilizes web and cloud technologies, APIs, and third-party software development frameworks to build and support application solutions. Provides lead support for design and development to one or more application development teams, and leads a team of local or outsourced software engineers to build and support business application solutions.

Job Description Responsibilities

Work collaboratively with other development staff, including contract and offshore Software Engineers, and business product owners in an agile environment. Code, test, identify, implement, and document solutions to business challenges utilizing web and cloud technologies. Perform design and analysis for deliverables. Lead large team design sessions for system level architecture solutions. Serve as a subject matter expert for a wide range of areas, applications, and technologies; mentor other team members in design/coding standards. Recommend solutions which take into consideration costs, business needs, and system impacts. Lead analysis and general architectural design across platforms toward the development of end-to-end solutions. Participate on committees or projects to help define organization-wide standards, processes, and guidelines. Utilize third-party software development frameworks, open-source libraries, and APIs to rapidly develop basic application solutions. Lead web development staff, including contract and off-shore developers; may have supervisory responsibility over employees. Learn and keep pace with the latest advances in the field and rapidly grasp new technologies to support the environment and contribute to project deliverables. Prepare presentations and lead development meetings.

Compensation

The Salary for this position generally ranges between $111,000 - $140,000 annually. Please note that the salary range is a good faith estimate for this position and actual starting pay is determined by several factors including qualifications, experience, geography, work location designation (in-office, hybrid, remote) and operational needs. Salary may vary above and below the stated amounts, as permitted by applicable law. Additionally, this position is typically eligible for an Annual Bonus based on the Company Bonus Plan/Individual Performance and is at the Company’s discretion. Applicants must be authorized to work for any employer in the U.S. We are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment Visa at this time.

This is a hybrid position requiring three days in office per week in one of our hub locations (Philadelphia, PA; Cedar Rapids, IA; Denver, CO). Relocation assistance will not be provided for this position.
