M&T Bank in Buffalo, NY is seeking a Lead Software Engineer to drive modernization of our Enterprise Entitlements platform, delivering scalable, cloud-native identity, access, and authorization solutions. The role requires leadership in architecture and hands-on development across digital banking systems.

You will lead design and development with Java, Spring Boot, REST APIs, and modern UI frameworks, while guiding cloud-native practices using Kubernetes, Docker, Istio, and Envoy.

Qualifications

• Associate’s degree with 7+ years of related work, or Bachelor’s with 5+ years, or equivalent experience.
• Strong Java and Spring Boot expertise.
• Experience building RESTful APIs and microservices.
• Angular or modern front-end development experience.
• Kubernetes, Docker, and cloud-native development.
• CI/CD pipeline implementation experience.
• Solid understanding of security, authentication, and authorization concepts.

Responsibilities

Position Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Lead Software Engineer to help drive the modernization of our Enterprise Entitlements platform. This role will provide technical leadership in designing, developing, and delivering scalable, secure, cloud-native solutions that support identity, access, and authorization capabilities across Digital Banking.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and support enterprise-grade applications using Java, Spring Boot, REST APIs, and modern UI frameworks.
• Lead implementation of cloud-native solutions leveraging Kubernetes, containers, and microservices architecture.
• Develop and maintain CI/CD pipelines supporting automated testing and deployment.
• Define and implement API and integration strategies across enterprise platforms.
• Partner with architects and security teams to implement authorization and policy-driven access controls.
• Contribute to service mesh architectures utilizing technologies such as Istio and Envoy.
• Author and maintain policy definitions using Rego/OPA (preferred).
• Mentor engineers and promote engineering excellence, resiliency, and operational best practices.

Education and Experience Required

• Associate’s degree and a minimum of 7 years’ systems analysis and/or application development work experience or Bachelor's degree and a minimum of 5 years' systems analysis and/or application development work experience. In lieu of a degree, a combined minimum of 9 year’s education and/or relevant work experience, including a minimum of 5 years’ system analysis and/or application development work experience.
• Strong Java and Spring Boot expertise.
• Experience developing RESTful APIs and microservices.
• Angular and/or modern front-end development experience.
• Kubernetes, Docker, and cloud-native development experience.
• CI/CD pipeline implementation experience.
• Strong understanding of security, authentication, and authorization concepts.

Preferred Qualifications

• Rego/Open Policy Agent (OPA) experience.
• Digital Banking or Financial Services experience.
• Experience with Service Mesh technologies (Istio, Envoy).
• Identity and Access Management (IAM) background.

M&T Bank is committed to fair, competitive, and market-informed pay for our employees. The pay range for this position is $116,400.00 - $194,000.00 Annual (USD). The successful candidate’s particular combination of knowledge, skills, and experience will inform their specific compensation.
