Job summary

Barclays in Whippany, NJ seeks a Lead Software Development Engineer - VP to drive the design, development and evolution of a global Macro Rates Trade Capture platform. You will lead multi-year initiatives, mentor engineers, and deliver scalable, secure software with modern Java frameworks and real-time architectures.

The role requires deep Java expertise, SQL optimization, and experience with microservices, containers, and CI/CD.

Qualifications

  • Deep expertise in developing and troubleshooting high-performance Java applications with knowledge of JVM internals, GC, and memory management.
  • Proven experience designing, tuning, and optimizing SQL on MS SQL Server and similar RDBMS; using ORM like Hibernate and caching like Redis/Guava/Coherence.
  • Experience with real-time, low-latency, event-driven architectures; working with XML/JSON/Protobuf and messaging platforms like Kafka/WebSphere MQ/Solace.
  • Extensive experience building scalable enterprise apps using modern Java frameworks (Spring, Spring Boot, Micronaut).
  • Demonstrated success leading the full SDLC across small teams with stakeholder management and collaboration.
  • Experience with microservices, containerization, and CI/CD using GitHub/GitLab; finance trade capture and risk knowledge beneficial.
  • UI development with React/Angular and familiarity with GenAI tools is a plus.

To design, develop and improve software, utilising various engineering methodologies, that provides business, platform, and technology capabilities for our customers and colleagues.

Accountabilities

Development and delivery of high‑quality software solutions by using industry aligned programming languages, frameworks, and tools. Ensuring that code is scalable, maintainable, and optimised for performance. Cross‑functional collaboration with product managers, designers, and other engineers to define software requirements, devise solution strategies, and ensure seamless integration and alignment with business objectives. Collaboration with peers, participate in code reviews, and promote a culture of code quality and knowledge sharing. Stay informed of industry technology trends and innovations and actively contribute to the organisation’s technology communities to foster a culture of technical excellence and growth. Adherence to secure coding practices to mitigate vulnerabilities, protect sensitive data, and ensure secure software solutions. Implementation of effective unit testing practices to ensure proper code design, readability, and reliability.

To be successful as a Lead Software Development Engineer - VP , you should have:
  • Deep expertise in developing and troubleshooting high‑performance, multi‑threaded Java applications, with good knowledge of JVM internals, garbage collection, and memory management
  • Proven experience designing, tuning, and optimizing complex SQL queries on Microsoft SQL Server and similar RDBMS platforms, leveraging ORM frameworks such as Hibernate and caching technologies including Redis, Guava, and Coherence
  • Considerable background in real‑time, low‑latency and event‑driven architectures, working with XML, JSON, and Protobuf message formats and messaging platforms such as Kafka, IBM WebSphere MQ, and Solace
  • Extensive experience building scalable enterprise applications using modern Java frameworks, including Spring, Spring Boot, and Micronaut
  • Demonstrated success leading the full Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) across small engineering teams, with ample stakeholder management, cross‑functional collaboration, and influencing skills
Other highly valued skills include:
  • Ample experience with modern software engineering practices, including microservices, containerisation, and CI/CD pipeline design using GitHub, GitLab, or similar platforms
  • Direct experience with financial trade capture and risk systems, with a solid understanding of rates trading workflows and messaging standards such as FIX, FpML, and SWIFT
  • Proven ability to build and support scalable, resilient enterprise applications within complex financial services environments
  • Experience developing web‑based user interfaces using modern frameworks such as React or Angular
  • Hands‑on experience with Claude Code and other GenAI coding assistants or agentic AI tools is a plus

This role is located in our Whippany, NJ office.

Minimum Salary: $170,000 Maximum Salary: $230,000

The minimum and maximum salary/rate information above includes only base salary or base hourly rate.

It does not include any other type of compensation or benefits that may be available.
