Job summary

DALLAS AREA RAPID TRANSIT INC. seeks a skilled Signal Systems Supervisor to oversee maintenance, testing, and upgrades of train signaling systems for the Ways, Structures and Amenities group.

You will lead technicians, assign preventive work, and ensure reliability of fiber optics, microprocessors, and related equipment. You must have an associate degree or technical training, 3 years in signal maintenance on electrified rail, and the ability to pass tests and DOT medical exams.

General Summary

Responsible for overseeing the programs and activities of Signal Systems personnel engaged in Signal Systems maintenance and for the complex Signal System testing, preventive maintenance, inspection, troubleshooting, upgrades and repair of train signaling systems, track switch machines, and grade crossing apparatus for Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) Ways, Structures and Amenities of the Maintenance Division.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Oversees personnel maintaining DARTs Signal Systems; assists in developing and training Signal Maintainers.
• Evaluate Signal inspections and preventative maintenance and makes work assignments accordingly.
• Troubleshoot and repair/replace the fiber optics network used for the Signal System.
• Troubleshoot and repair/replace microprocessors, computers, recorder/analyzing equipment, and interpret and analyze data.
• Maintained, troubleshoot, and repaired/replaced electrical equipment using voltages ranging from 12vdc to 480 vacs.
• Knowledge to perform necessary programming of microprocessor-based Signal System components and complex tests on Signal Systems.
• Monitor material usage, preventative and corrective maintenance databases, and the work order system.
• Maintains and monitors spare parts inventory, equipment, tools, test equipment, and safety equipment.
• Knowledge of interpreting circuit configurations and integrated circuit flow diagrams to develop and implement effective solutions for operational faults of Signal subsystems and components.
• Perform signal tests and evaluations as required to certify compliance with reliability, maintainability, and safety criteria per DART standards.
• Install, repair, maintain, and remove/replace components of the signal system, which include all associated signal equipment, such as highway grade crossing equipment, interlocking devices, cab signaling equipment (ATP), train to the wayside (TWC), vital/non-vital processors, fiber optic network, power distribution centers, UPS (uninterruptible power supplies), and other signal apparatus related to rail service.
• Responsible for safely functioning signal equipment governing train movement during repairs, renewals, or replacement and promptly responding to all signal-related occurrences and/or emergency situations.
• Oversees system performance and provides solutions to problems.
• Promotes and enforces established training, safety practices, and procedures and takes necessary precautions.
• Comply with AREMA, FRA, APTA, FTA rules and regulations, and DART safety requirements, rules, and regulations.
• Interfaces with city technicians, vendors, and internal and external contacts.
• Maintain proper communication with Rail Operation Control while on duty.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

• Associate's Degree from an accredited college, university, or technical institute in Business Administration, Computer Science, Rail Technology, Rail Signal Systems Civil/Electrical/Mechanical engineering, or other related technical fields.
• Three (3) years experience in preventative and corrective Signal maintenance on an electrified rail transit system or Class I Railroad.
• Must pass a technical test.
• Must obtain and maintain certification in compliance with all state and federal regulations applicable to this position.
• Must have a valid Driver's License Class-C and be able to obtain a Texas Commercial Drivers License (CDL) Class-A Restricted within 90 days of employment; no Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) conviction within the last sixty (60) consecutive months, not more than one (1) DWI/DUI on driving record, and not more than three (3) convictions of moving violations within the last thirty-six (36) consecutive months to operate DART non-revenue vehicles.
• Operates DART non-revenue vehicles as required, such as crane and bucket trucks, flatbeds, trailers, etc.
• Applicants/employees must pass and maintain a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical (medical) examination including pre-employment drug test and must submit to Federal Transportation Administration-required random drug/alcohol testing as a condition of continued employment.
• Proficient in personal computer (PC), software applications to include MS Office (Word, Excel, Access).
• Must be able to communicate effectively with the public, co-workers, supervisors, and managers to ensure efficient operations, promote safety, and respond to emergencies.
• Must also be able to read and comprehend a variety of work-related/required technical manuals, safety rules, and regulations.
• Ability to have the functional and technical knowledge and skills to do the job at a high level of accomplishment.
• Ability to make decisions in the absence of guidance from others and to plan and carry out work assignments in situations where the procedures have been established.
• Must have excellent customer service skills and interact effectively with a diverse customer population under pressure.

• Physical ability to be mobile 100% of work time, exert physical effort while standing, walking, or lifting materials/tools/objects weighing up to 100. The position requires working in crowded and tight spaces, tunnels, and aerial structures.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Works in an environment where there is potential exposure to dust, noise, or temperature. Work could involve unpleasant working conditions such as working near fast-moving trains and in confined spaces, dust, noise, temperature, weather, petroleum products, and chemicals while visiting DART's operating facilities.
