Job summary

Newport News Shipbuilding, a division of Huntington Ingalls Industries, is seeking skilled Fitters to read blueprints and fabricate steel structures. You will measure, cut, grind, fit, align and tack weld parts across the shipyard, including shops, platens, dry-docks, and onboard ships.

Training through the shipyard welding school is provided. Role involves climbing, working in confined spaces, and performing in all weather conditions.

Qualifications

• Candidates must be 18 years of age or older and legally eligible to work in the U.S.
• Ability to climb ladders and work at extreme heights.
• Work in confined spaces and diverse weather conditions.
• Capable of lifting 40 lbs or more and passing a physical agility test.

Responsibilities

• Read and interpret blueprints or plans to place, maneuver, or fabricate steel structures.
• Use measuring, cutting, grinding, fitting, aligning and tack welding tools for parts.
• Work across shipyard locations including shops, platens, dry-docks, and onboard ships.
• Attend welding school and qualify through shipyard programs.
