Job summary

UAB Medicine in Birmingham, AL seeks a Cath Lab Technologist to assist physicians in diagnosing and treating cardiac and peripheral vascular disease. You will function as scrub, monitor, and circulator, operating cath lab equipment and ensuring patient safety.

Qualified candidates hold CPR, ACLS, RCIS/ARRT, a high school diploma, and two years of cath lab experience. This on-site role emphasizes infection control and radiation safety.

Qualifications

• Current CPR certification required or must be obtained within 30 days of hire.
• ACLS certification from the American Heart Association required within 6 months of hire.
• RCIS or ARRT registration in good standing.
• High School Diploma or equivalent with two years cath lab experience.

Responsibilities

• Assist physician in diagnosing and treating cardiac and peripheral vascular disease and arrhythmias.
• Serve as scrub assistant, monitor, and circulator; operate cath lab equipment.
• Lead staff orientation, schedule coordination, and documentation of procedures.
• Enter patient information into databases and document exam details.
• Maintain sterile fields and adhere to infection control guidelines.
• Monitor vital signs and imaging systems; ensure patient safety during procedures.
• Observe radiation safety practices and use protective PPE.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Description

To assist the physician in diagnosing and treating cardiac and peripheral vascular disease and cardiac arrhythmias. To function in the roles of scrub assistant, monitor and circulator. To operate various equipment utilized in the cath lab.

• Serves as a technical resource to other technicians; provides leadership and guidance in performance of daily tasks.
• Prepares staff work schedule and coordinates employee time off. Plans and coordinates orientation and completes appropriate documentation of the orientation process.
• Admits and orients patient to cardiac cath lab according to pre-procedural checklist. Accurately enters patient information to database, hemodynamic and x-ray systems. Explains testing procedure to patient and/or significant others including exam to be performed, type of contrast media used, length of exam and equipment necessary to perform exam.
• Functions as a scrub assistant; establishes and maintains sterile field according to department/institution policy. Follows all guidelines regarding infection control.
• Functions in the role of monitor; operates EKG, x-ray and hemodynamic equipment to monitor changes in patient's blood pressure, heart rate, EKG and pulse oximetry during diagnostic or therapeutic procedures. Intervenes appropriately to changes in patient's physiological status.
• Interacting with patient as to his/her comfort and safety, monitors patient vital signs and procedural documentation, sets up and maintains equipment and treatment room during diagnostic or therapeutic procedure, runs blood oximetry for cardiac output and assists physician with various diagnostic and mapping systems.
• Operates various equipment used in diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, including but not limited to, Hemodynamic monitoring, defibrillator, intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP), poser injector, stents, rotoblator, temporary pacemakers, TEC device, angiojet and x-ray in a safe and effective manner.
• Observes all occupational and radiation safety regulations. Wears appropriate protective aprons, goggles and gloves.
• Demonstrates a responsible attitude toward continued professional growth. Maintains all required certifications/licensures; completes all mandatory education requirements. Stays abreast of changes in technology.
• Performs other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Licensure

• Current CPR certification required or must be obtained within thirty (30) days of hire.
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification from the American Heart Association (AHA) required within six (6) months from date of hire into classification.
• Currently registered as a Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist (RCIS) through Cardiovascular Credentialin( International (CCI) and/or American Registry of Radiology Technologist (ARRT).

Education

• High School Diploma or equivalent. Two years of previous Cath Lab Technologist experience required.
