Job summary

Coherent Corp. in Sunnyvale, CA, is seeking a qualified engineer to lead the setup, development, and qualification of laser welding processes for the ASN WSS production line.

You will define process parameters, equipment needs, work instructions, and acceptance criteria, coordinating verification with engineering, manufacturing, quality, and suppliers. You will drive process recovery, monitor yield and reliability, establish control plans, and provide training to production staff.

Qualifications

• BS or MS in mechanical design, engineering, physics or related technical fields.
• Minimum 5 years of related experience.
• Experience establishing, qualifying, and maintaining manufacturing processes, tooling, fixtures, and production lines; laser welding experience preferred.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

• Lead the setup, development, and qualification of laser welding processes for the ASN WSS production line.


• Define process parameters, equipment requirements, work instructions, and acceptance criteria.


• Coordinate process verification, validation, and qualification activities with engineering, manufacturing, quality, and supplier teams.


• Lead efforts to resume ASN WSS production, including equipment readiness, process recovery, and production line qualification.


• Monitor process performance, yield, quality, and reliability; identify root causes and implement corrective actions.


• Establish and maintain process-control plans, inspection methods, and related technical documentation.


• Provide technical support and training to production personnel.


• Drive continuous improvement to enhance process stability, productivity, and product quality.


• Maintain qualified laser welding equipment and processes, ensuring compliance with applicable safety and quality requirements.

Education & Experience

• BS or MS in mechanical design, engineering, physics or related technical fields.


• Minimum 5 years of related experience.

Skills

• Hands-on experience with hermetic sealing, optical/opto-mechanical systems, leak testing, and reliability-focused mechanical design.


• Experience establishing, qualifying, and maintaining manufacturing processes, tooling, fixtures, and production lines; laser welding experience is preferred.


• Proficiency in SolidWorks and familiarity with GD&T, tolerance analysis, material selection, and DFM/DFA principles.


• Strong cross-functional leadership and problem-solving skills, with experience working with domestic and international suppliers to improve quality, yield, cost, and production readiness.

Working Conditions

• Good office working conditions. Occasionally required to work in a Class 10000 clean-room environment, wearing smock with mask and gloves.

Physical Requirements

• Able to move light equipment and tooling (< 25lbs) as needed when setting up manufacturing stations.
