Job summary

IPS - Integrated Project Services, LLC in Cary, North Carolina seeks a Lead Plumbing/Fire Protection Engineer to lead design efforts on complex facilities. The role requires guiding projects through feasibility, concept, and detailed design while mentoring junior engineers and coordinating with clients and code officials.

The ideal candidate has 10–12 years in engineering/design, strong CAD experience (AutoCAD/Revit), and a PE is preferred.

Qualifications

  • 10–12 years of engineering/design experience in building design.
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical or Fire Protection Engineering from an accredited four‑year College or University.
  • Expertise in computer operation for engineering design programs and computer‑aided drafting (AutoCAD/Revit).
  • Experience with software for performing plumbing and fire protection engineering calculations (HASS/Viking/Pipe Flow/IPS Calculation Spread Sheets, etc.).
  • Experience with different piping materials and pressures for all types of systems: (Drainage/Utility/Fire Protection, etc.).
  • 4 years of experience overseeing engineers and designers on project teams.

Responsibilities

  • Lead projects on all phases of work, from Feasibility Reports to Detailed Design and Documentation.
  • Mentor Designers and Engineers who are early in their careers with project execution.
  • Assess project requirements, define scope, budget and staffing with the Project Manager.
  • Write the scope of work for design based on client meetings.
  • Prepares engineering studies and schematic design for new systems.
  • Prepares reports, specifications, plans, and supports construction for projects.
  • Reviews and evaluates the operation of existing systems.
  • Coordinate with code officials and other design professionals on interpretations or exceptions.
  • Assigns and reviews plumbing and fire protection layout drawings and calculations.
  • Prepares or reviews construction budgets; promotes design/production standards.

At IPS, we are global leaders in developing innovative solutions for the consulting, architecture, engineering, project controls, procurement, construction management, and CQV of technically complex facilities, primarily in the life sciences industry. We are looking for a talented Lead Plumbing/Fire Protection Engineer to join our dedicated team at our office in Cary, North Carolina.

In this role, you will work independently on various projects as assigned by a Project Manager or Group Lead. You may oversee the entire design process or assist as a technical expert on a specialized design, and work on several concurrent projects.

Additional Responsibilities
  • Performs the role of Project Lead on projects for all phases of work, including but not limited to Feasibility Reports, Building Assessments, Concept and Basis of Design Reports, and Detailed Design and Documentation.
  • Mentors, supports, and guides Designers and Engineers who are early in their careers with project execution.
  • Assesses the requirements of a project, breaks a project into tasks, and works with a Project Manager to determine the scope of work, budget, and staffing.
  • Write the scope of work for design, based on preliminary review and meetings with the client.
  • Prepares engineering studies and schematic design for new systems.
  • Prepares reports, specifications, plans, and supports construction for projects.
  • Reviews and evaluates the operation of existing systems.
  • Works with code officials and other design professionals when an interpretation or exception to building codes is required.
  • Assigns and reviews the work of the project design team.
  • Checks the progress of work and produces markups to be incorporated in drawings.
  • Communicates with clients and alerts the Project Manager to changes of scope or additional services.
  • Reviews contractor applications for payment. Has a thorough understanding of the construction process.
  • Coordinates all aspects of project document completion within the company and externally with clients, as well as other design professionals.
  • Assigns and reviews all types of Plumbing Design Layout drawings, such as all types of drainage piping, all types of utility service, equipment layouts, and coordination with all other trades.
  • Assigns and reviews All Types of Fire Protection Design Layout drawings, such as Fire Service piping layouts, Hazard Classification / Equipment Layouts, and coordination with All Other Trades.
  • Assigns and reviews Plumbing calculations, using engineering formulas and skills for design, such as all types of drainage systems, all types of utility systems, and all types of equipment sizing.
  • Assigns and reviews Fire Protection calculations, using engineering formulas and skills for design, such as all types of Fire Protection Systems, and all types of equipment sizing.
  • Assigns and reviews Plumbing and Fire Protection specialized drawings, such as operations matrices, elevations, or details, riser diagrams, and P&IDs.
  • Prepares or reviews construction budgets, based on experience and scope of project.
  • Promotes the use of, and participates in the development of, company design and production standards.
  • Assists in the education and development of design staff and acts as a resource for design questions.
  • Performs additional tasks or special projects as assigned.
Qualifications & Requirements
  • 10-12 years of Engineering/design experience in the building design industry.
    • Plumbing ex. drainage systems, utility systems, drainage/utility pump systems, sizing drainage/utility systems, water heaters, etc.
    • Fire protection example: suppression systems, hazard classifications, fire pump systems, fire piping/sprinkler sizing, etc.
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical or Fire Protection Engineering from an accredited four‑year College or University.
  • Expertise in computer operation for engineering design programs and computer‑aided drafting (AutoCAD/Revit).
  • Thorough knowledge of Mechanical or Fire Protection system design and applicable codes.
  • Experience with software for performing plumbing and fire protection engineering calculations (HASS/Viking/Pipe Flow/IPS Calculation Spread Sheets, etc.).
  • Experience with different piping materials and pressures for all types of systems: (Drainage/Utility/Fire Protection, etc.).
  • 4 years of experience overseeing engineers and designers on project teams.
Preferred Qualifications
  • A professional engineer (PE).
Physical Demands
  • Must be able to stand, sit, and walk for prolonged periods.
  • Must possess the ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl as required.
  • Must be able to lift and move objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • Must be able to climb ladders as necessary.
Work Environment
  • Must be able to work in both indoor and outdoor environments, which may include exposure to varying working conditions.
  • Must be able to adhere to strict cleanroom gowning protocol.
Travel
  • This position will require 5-20% travel or as required by the assigned project.
  • Position may be assigned to client site for an extended period.
  • Overnight travel or staying in the city of the Client's location is possible, depending on the assignment.

  • Position will visit Client sites and must adhere to stated safety rules.
  • Must have access to reliable transportation.
  • Must have the ability to travel and commute on a daily or routine basis.
