Job summary

The Pennsylvania State University’s Straw Lab in University Park, PA seeks an Advanced Professional Research Technologist – Plant Sciences to lead complex turfgrass field and lab research, develop data-driven management recommendations, and guide students and staff.

The role includes coordinating technology, budgeting, outreach, and teaching Turfgrass Soils courses, with opportunities for grant work and professional development in a collaborative university setting.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in turfgrass science, plant sciences, environmental science, or closely related field.
• Master’s degree in turfgrass science or related discipline preferred.
• Minimum of 3 years of relevant turfgrass research, management, or teaching experience.
• Ability to lead projects independently and coordinate cross-functional teams.

Responsibilities

• Lead planning, coordination, and execution of advanced turfgrass field and laboratory research trials.
• Oversee complex experimental setups and integrate new technologies.
• Perform in-depth data analysis and synthesize findings for management recommendations.
• Maintain and calibrate laboratory and field equipment; develop SOPs for data acquisition and QC.
• Manage project budgets, expenditures, and procurement for materials and equipment.
• Coordinate outreach programs to communicate findings to stakeholders in industry and academia.
• Mentor students and participate in curriculum development related to turfgrass science.
• Supervise part-time and temporary research staff; support hiring decisions.
• Represent the lab at national conferences and stay current with regulatory requirements.

Education
