Lead Piping Materials Engineer
Tonawanda, NY, United States | req28346
Responsibilities
- Lead piping materials engineering for small to mid‑sized industrial gas projects from early design through construction support, coordinating internal and external resources to deliver specifications, pipe classes, material selection, and procurement support.
- Lead material selection based on process conditions and corrosion environment; ensure code compliance (ASME/ASTM/API/DIN/ISO/NACE) and verify compatibility, including oxygen service suitability.
- Develop and maintain detailed piping component and procurement specifications, including data sheets for pipe, fittings, flanges, valves, gaskets, bolting, and specialty items, ensuring full component/material compatibility with project design requirements.
- Verify material grades, classifications, and supplier certifications; ensure compliance with applicable codes/standards and local regulations such as ASME B31.3, ASME B16.5, API 610/650, NACE.
- Evaluate corrosion risks based on process fluids and environmental conditions; specify corrosion allowances, recommend coatings, linings or alloy upgrades, and ensure required material testing/verification is completed.
- Assess material suitability for thermal and mechanical loading in high‑temperature, cryogenic, and high‑pressure service, specifying materials that withstand expected stresses without deformation, cracking, or fatigue.
- Lead procurement and vendor technical support: develop requisitions and bid packages, perform technical bid evaluations, review/approve vendor drawings and submittals, manage deviations, and support inspection/expediting as needed.
- Provide materials engineering input to reliability and mechanical integrity programs (damage mechanisms, corrosion/material upgrades, QA/QC requirements) and support construction/commissioning activities (field queries, punch list resolution, turnover documentation).
- Prepare and maintain piping material class (PMC) documents, piping specifications, catalogs, supplier documentation, and procurement data on readiness for shipment.
- Review oxygen system design (flow/pressure, velocity limits, ignition risks), approve oxygen‑compatible materials and components, enforce oxygen cleanliness and contamination control, and safeguard critical oxygen safety knowledge and design assumptions.
- Estimate discipline hours, coordinate workshare execution, and develop/maintain discipline procedures and templates aligned with applicable codes and standards.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering with breadth and depth knowledge in piping materials engineering and working knowledge of other engineering disciplines.
- 8+ years of experience in piping materials for industrial gas, LNG, natural gas, refining, petrochemicals, chemicals, or similar industries, and understanding applicable codes and regulations for facility design and engineering.
- Experience leading the piping materials scope for small to mid‑sized projects or project packages (e.g., managing deliverables, supporting reviews and construction). PE license or EIT certification (with progress toward PE licensure) preferred.
- Positive attitude with ability to adapt work schedule to accommodate project specific needs.
- Advanced computer skills with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and Adobe Acrobat.
- Familiarity with piping material specification databases and engineering design software such as Linde Material Information System (LMI), Piping Export Data (PED), SmartPlant Materials, AutoPIPE, Caesar II, SAP, or similar tools.
- Detailed understanding of Plant Design Engineering disciplines (Civil, Structural, Piping Material, Pipe Stress Analysis, Piping Design, and 3D CAD Applications).
- Willingness to travel domestically and internationally up to 25%, including potential extended assignments at project sites (1–3 months).
Compensation and Benefits
Salary range: $88,875 - $154,050 USD annually. Competitive compensation and an outstanding benefits package including health, dental, disability, and life insurance; paid holidays and vacation; 401(k) matching; pension benefits; employee discount program; opportunities for educational and professional growth.
