Job summary

HCA Florida North Florida Hospital in Gainesville is seeking a Lead Phlebotomist to coordinate daily phlebotomy operations across inpatient and outpatient settings. This role supports quality and safety standards while ensuring timely specimen collection.

You will supervise staff, ensure specimen integrity, and train new hires under laboratory leadership, promoting exceptional customer service and teamwork. This position is on site in Gainesville, FL.

Qualifications

  • Graduation from accredited phlebotomy program or an Associate’s degree in a scientific or health-related field (Preferred).
  • One to two years of experience as a phlebotomist, certified medical assistant, or EMT (Required).
  • High School Diploma or GED (Required).
  • Phlebotomy Certification (Preferred).

Responsibilities

  • Performs venipuncture, capillary puncture, blood culture collection, and other specimen collection procedures according to established laboratory standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Ensures accurate patient identification, specimen labeling, documentation, processing, and transport to maintain specimen integrity and testing accuracy.
  • Assists laboratory leadership with quality assurance initiatives, regulatory compliance activities, audits, and performance improvement projects.
  • Assists in monitoring specimen collection worklists, pending collections, and unreceived specimens to ensure timely resolution.
  • Demonstrates exceptional customer service and professionalism in all interactions with patients, families, physicians, nursing staff, and colleagues.
  • Serves as a resource for laboratory and clinical staff regarding specimen collection requirements, testing protocols, and laboratory procedures.
  • Provides daily leadership and operational guidance to phlebotomy staff while fostering a collaborative and supportive work environment.
  • Assists with onboarding, orientation, training, competency validation, and ongoing development of new and existing staff.
  • Serves as a preceptor, mentor, and subject matter expert for phlebotomists, students, and other laboratory personnel.
  • Promotes accountability, teamwork, professionalism, and service excellence among staff members.
  • Supports departmental initiatives designed to improve patient satisfaction, operational efficiency, quality outcomes, and employee engagement.
  • Encourages adoption of evidence-based practices and continuous process improvement.
  • Maintains competency in all required laboratory and phlebotomy functions.

Lead Phlebotomist

The Lead Phlebotomist is responsible for coordinating and supporting the daily operations of the phlebotomy department while performing advanced specimen collection services for inpatient, outpatient, emergency, and specialty care populations. This position serves as a clinical resource and role model for phlebotomy staff, ensuring high-quality patient care, regulatory compliance, operational efficiency, and exceptional customer service. Under the direction of laboratory leadership, the Lead Phlebotomist oversees workflow, staffing assignments, training, competency validation, inventory management, and quality initiatives while maintaining proficiency in all phlebotomy functions. The Lead Phlebotomist promotes a culture of safety, accountability, teamwork, and service excellence and assists with implementing departmental policies, procedures, and performance improvement activities.
