Job summary

Beth Israel Lahey Health in Boston is seeking a Lead Ophthalmic Assistant for the Division of Ophthalmology. The role provides technical oversight, training, and quality assessment within the division, coordinating daily staff levels and preparing patients for evaluation by an Ophthalmologist or Optometrist.

Under general supervision, you will oversee assistants, manage schedules, triage refills, monitor equipment, and ensure regulatory compliance.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or GED is required.
• Certification as COA, COT or COMT by JCAHPO is required.
• 5-8 years related work experience required.
• Refraction and applanation tonometry experience.
• Experience with computer systems including web-based applications and Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access).

Responsibilities

• Oversees Ophthalmic Assistants to meet patient and provider needs and coordinates daily patient flow.
• Triages and facilitates prescription refills per policy and maintains equipment and supply rooms.
• Triages emergencies, assesses severity and allocates resources to manage patient volume.
• Escort patients to exam rooms, take patient history focused on eye symptoms and perform assessments.
• Perform ancillary testing (visual fields, OCT, fundus photography, and related procedures).

Job Summary: Under general supervision, functions as the lead Ophthalmic Assistant for the Division of Ophthalmology and provides technical oversight, training and assessment of quality standards within the division. Coordinates daily ophthalmic assistant staffing levels. Performs numerous functions to prepare patients for evaluation by an Ophthalmologist and/or Optometrist.

Job Description:

Essential Responsibilities

1. Oversees the Ophthalmic Assistants in order to meet the needs of patients and providers. Coordinates and responds to issues and problems brought forth by the providers relating to daily patient flow. Runs and monitors provider schedules. Assigns responsibilities; provides training to assistants and performance feedback to manager.
2. Triages and facilitates prescription refills per departmental policy. Oversees and monitors ophthalmic equipment and supply rooms; orders and stocks medical and office supplies. Coordinates repair of equipment. Monitors clinic for compliance with Joint Commission and other regulatory requirements.
3. Triages emergency patients; assesses the severity of the problem and determines a course of action. Monitors patient flow in the clinic and makes decisions about resources to appropriately respond to patient volume and patient needs. Assists and oversees customer service component of the unit.
4. Escorts patients to and from exam rooms. Takes a complete history focusing on the patient's eye symptoms. Checks allergies and medications. Measures pinhole baseline vision or refraction. Uses tonopens and applanation for glaucoma tension. Administers drops for dilation.
5. Performs ancillary testing up to and including visual fields, A/B ultrasonic scans, autorefraction, OCT, fundus photography, IOL master, lensometry and topography.

Required Qualifications

1. High School diploma or GED required.
2. Certification as COA, COT or COMT by JCAHPO.
3. 5-8 years related work experience required.

5. Experience with computer systems required, including web based applications and some Microsoft Office applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access.

Physical Nature of the Job

Light work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force frequently to move objects. Some elements of the job are sedentary, but the employee will be required to stand for periods of time or move through out the hospital campus

Pay Range

$31.42 - $42.29

The pay range listed for this position is the base hourly wage range the organization reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position at this time. Actual compensation is determined based on several factors, that may include seniority, education, training, relevant experience, relevant certifications, geographyof work location, job responsibilities, or other applicable factors permissible by law. Compensation may exceed the base hourly rate depending on shift differentials, call pay, premium pay, overtime pay, and other additional pay practices, as applicable to the position and in accordance with the law.
