Job summary

HDR, a global engineering and architecture firm, seeks a Lead Mechanical Engineer for Power Generation & Renewable in Tampa, FL (remote-eligible). You will lead design teams, oversee schematics, and ensure code compliance.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree preferred; strong leadership and supervisory experience.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in the Power Market Sector; PE license.
  • Experience in proposal development and client management.
  • Knowledge of large-scale power generation mechanical systems.
  • Experience with power plant systems and balance-of-plant concepts.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, manage, and coordinate the design team through schematic design development and contract documents.
  • Mentor and develop engineers and designers.
  • Manage workload to meet project schedules and budgets.
  • Perform high‑complexity designs including analyses and equipment selection.
  • Develop P&IDs and mechanical drawings for power plant systems.
  • Prepare equipment specifications and BOMs for boilers, turbines, condensers, and pumps.
  • Produce PFDs, general arrangements, and deliverables per HDR standards.
  • Review work for HDR Quality Process and provide status updates to leadership.
  • Travel as needed to project sites and client meetings.

Role Overview

Lead Mechanical Engineer – Power Generation & Renewable – Tampa, FL (remote‑eligible)

Primary Responsibilities
  • Lead, manage, and coordinate the design team through schematic design development and contract documents.
  • Mentor and develop less experienced engineers and designers.
  • Manage and coordinate workload to meet project schedules.
  • Conduct field visits with the Project Manager and other disciplines.
  • Perform high‑complexity engineering designs, including analysis, calculations, research, and equipment selection.
  • Develop mechanical piping and instrument diagrams (P&IDs) for power plant systems such as steam cycles, boiler feed, condensate, water treatment, flue gas, hydrogen, and utility systems.
  • Prepare sizing calculations and specifications for major equipment – boilers, condensers, cooling towers, tanks, blowers, and pumps.
  • Produce mechanical engineering designs, equipment lists, general arrangements, auxiliary power demands, and process flow diagrams (PFDs).
  • Verify deliverables against industry codes, contract requirements, and internal standards.
  • Compile mechanical documentation for construction.
  • Assist in schedule creation, work assignments, and staffing planning to ensure project success.
  • Provide technical mentoring and oversight.
  • Balance multiple engineering tasks concurrently.
  • Develop testing and commissioning plans.
  • Review engineering work following HDR Quality Process.
  • Lead project teams and provide status updates as needed.
  • Maintain relationships with peers, client organizations, vendor representatives, and sub‑consultants.
  • Identify and develop new strategic relationships to support winning and executing assignments for the Power Generation and Renewable team and other HDR groups.
  • Occasional travel is required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • Previous supervisory experience.
  • Experience in proposal development and client management.
  • Minimum 7 years of project execution experience in the Power or Heavy Industrial Market Sectors.
  • Mechanical engineering experience in simple or combined‑cycle gas turbines, renewables, coal, and hydroelectric projects.
  • Knowledge of mechanical powerhouse and balance‑of‑plant controls and power systems.
  • Experience with large‑scale power generation mechanical systems.
  • Consulting engineering background highly desirable.
  • Ability to produce design drawings – one‑line, three‑line, schematics, general arrangements, and bill of materials.
  • Experience developing proposals and estimates for Power Generation and Renewable projects.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in the Power Market Sector.
  • Valid professional engineering license recognized by the licensing board for the location (e.g., PE or P.Eng).
  • Extensive project execution experience within the Power Market Sector.
  • Proficient computer skills in Microsoft Office and standard power‑sector design software (PLS CAD, AutoCAD, Plant 3D, AutoPipe, Revit).
