Title: Lead Mechanical Engineer/Associate (Plumbing & Fire Protection Focus)

Market: All of our mechanical team members have an opportunity to serve across many markets.

Reports To: Team Leader of Mechanical Engineering Department

I. Summary

Lead Mechanical Engineers and Associates are responsible for the development of air distribution systems, single line control diagrams, load studies and analysis as well as equipment selection. Responsibilities include assisting with planning, conducting and evaluating approaches to meet project objectives in a timely, cost-effective fashion.

An Engineer is a licensed professional who has obtained a Professional Engineer (PE) certification, demonstrating advanced competency and legal authority to practice engineering. An Associate is an individual who has earned an accredited bachelor’s degree in engineering but has not yet achieved PE licensure. Associates may also have successfully completed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination as part of their progression toward professional licensure.

Core Function
  • Perform engineering tasks and work with engineers and designers to produce projects in design.
  • Review Plumbing and Fire Protection designs per QC/QA standards.
  • Assist CA representative in reviewing submittals and answering questions from projects in the field.

Plumbing and Fire Protection Engineering
  • Perform basic plumbing and fire protection drafting with minimal direction.
  • Create and print drawings.
  • Draft plumbing and fire protection based on comments and markups.
  • Draft and digitize plumbing and fire protection existing conditions.
  • Draft, digitize, and convert plumbing and fire protection field notes to CAD.
  • Assist with plumbing and fire protection drawing and document template management.
  • Understand basic plumbing and fire protection principals used in design.
  • Layout basic domestic water, hot water, waste and vent, storm, natural gas, medical gas, and sprinkler head systems.
  • Use AutoCAD and Revit design software.
  • Edit simple stick on specifications.
  • Assist with RFI review and response.
  • Assist with change order review and response.
  • Attend Plumbing and Fire Protection department meetings.
  • Intermediate working knowledge of Plumbing and Fire Protection codes.
  • Follow and work with design checklists.
  • Follow and work with review checklists.
  • Capable of small scale project designs (<2000 s.f. / less complex design / toilet room and mop sink).
  • Coordinate plumbing and fire protection utilities with municipalities with direction.
  • Assist with project field visits.
  • Perform drawing revisions.
  • Produce drawing sketches.
  • Perform peer drawing reviews.
  • Participates in company technical trainings.
  • Provide pump design layout and connections.
  • Layout basic vacuum waste systems.
  • Layout basic compressed air systems.
  • Understand the intricacies of new, existing, and demolition work and how they relate during design.
  • Assist with job proposal drafts.
  • Attend construction meetings.
  • Edit complex book specifications.
  • Manage submittal reviews and responses.
  • Manage RFI reviews and responses.
  • Review change orders.
  • Possess a well-established knowledge of multiple Plumbing and Fire Protection codes.
  • Troubleshoot Plumbing and Fire Protection projects challenges.
  • Lead, motivate, and direct Plumbing and Fire Protection support staff team.
  • Provide suggestions for possible Plumbing and Fire Protection process improvements.
  • Conduct Plumbing and Fire Protection code research.
  • Assist with Plumbing and Fire Protection feasibility studies.
  • Engage in Plumbing and Fire Protection project management.
  • Attend architectural / client / contractor coordination meetings.
  • Perform field surveys and field visits.
  • Capable of medium scale project design (2000 s.f. to 10,000 s.f. / medium complexity).
  • Perform calculations on domestic water, hot water, waste and vent, grease, storm, natural gas, medical gas, compressed air, pumps, and fire protection systems.
  • Coordinate plumbing and fire protection utilities with municipalities independently.
  • Work with product sales representatives to perform design, product review, investigation, and research.
  • Attend industry meetings and conferences.
  • Manage plumbing and fire protection drawings and document templates.
  • Capable of specification revisions.
  • Perform internal MEP coordination.
  • Perform external MEP coordination.
  • Generate plans review comment response letters.
  • Generate plans review comment drawing revisions.
  • Complete permit applications.
  • Compose a design narrative.
  • Create plumbing and fire protection details.
  • Perform engineer drawing reviews.
  • Manage supporting engineers and designers project tasks.
  • Create job proposals with minimal assistance.

III. Supervisory Responsibilities

There may be direct supervisory responsibilities associated with this position. Team leaders may assign fire protection and plumbing engineers, designers or co‑ops to be under lead engineer’s supervision.

IV. Qualifications
Education
  • Bachelor’s Degree (B.S) from a four‑year university or equivalent experience is required.
  • Professional Engineering license preferred.
  • LEED AP is preferred.
Experience
  • 5+ years working in an MEP engineering consulting firm on multiple building types.
  • Experience in healthcare preferred.
Communication Skills
