Job summary

Symbotic in Wilmington, DE is seeking a Staff Mechanical Engineer to lead the mechanical development of our mobile four-wheeled robot product line from concept through production. You will design frames, drives, packaging and support hardware with contract manufacturers to scale quality and cost efficiency.

Ideal candidates have 8+ years in mechanical engineering, including robotics, and strong SolidWorks/PLM skills. Travel up to 25% may be required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related technical discipline.
• 8+ years of mechanical engineering experience, including 2+ years in robotics or related fields.
• Strong proficiency with SolidWorks and experience with PDM/PLM systems.
• Experience supporting contract manufacturers, including DFM reviews and ECNs.
• Hands-on experience designing jigs, fixtures, tooling, or manufacturing support equipment.
• Strong understanding of GD&T, tolerance stack-ups, and manufacturing methods (sheet metal, machining, injection molding, die casting).
• Excellent cross-functional communication; travel up to 25%.

Responsibilities

• Serve as the mechanical engineering lead for a mobile 4-wheeled robot product line from concept to end-of-life.
• Design and develop mechanical assemblies including frames, drive systems, electromechanical packaging, and supporting hardware components.
• Create 3D models, detailed drawings, and BOMs using SolidWorks or equivalent CAD tools.
• Apply DFM/DFA principles to optimize designs for high-volume contract manufacturing and cost-efficient production.
• Act as the primary mechanical engineering interface with contract manufacturers, supporting production builds, troubleshooting defects, and resolving quality escapes through RCCA methods.
• Lead design reviews, engineering changes (ECNs), and documentation updates within PLM/PDM systems.
• Design and implement assembly jigs, production fixtures, and tooling to improve manufacturing quality, throughput, and repeatability.
• Support PPAP, FAI, production ramp activities, and travel up to 25% as needed to manufacturing or partner sites.
