Job summary

Sargent & Lundy is seeking a Mechanical Team Lead to guide a cross-functional group through detailed design for power, oil & gas, and CCUS facilities. You will review calculations, specifications, P&IDs, and equipment selections while mentoring junior staff and coordinating with clients and vendors.

Hybrid role requiring in‑office work three days per week in Englewood, CO, with travel to client sites as needed.

Qualifications

  • BSME from ABET‑accredited program required; MSME preferred.
  • Ten+ years in mechanical design for heavy industrial plants (power, oil & gas, or chemical).
  • Three+ years leading an engineering design team.

Description

Your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Acting as the Mechanical team lead by overseeing a team of junior and senior engineers and designers in coordinating detailed design phases for all aspects of mechanical engineering work
  • Working on challenging assignments that include investigating, troubleshooting, and solving a wide variety of mechanical engineering issues
  • Developing integrated systems designs for the planned work, including:
  • Design, modification, and analysis of power plant mechanical systems, including primary steam/water cycle systems and secondary balance of plant systems
  • Design, modification, and analysis of Oil & Gas mechanical systems/facilities, including compressor stations, meter stations, pump stations, pipelines, gas processing plants, wellhead systems, central gathering facilities, and CO2/CCUS facilities
  • Preparing and reviewing calculations to support equipment sizing, optimization evaluations, and selection
  • Preparing and reviewing technical specifications for mechanical engineering equipment
  • Preparing and reviewing material lists, equipment lists, and line lists
  • Reviewing piping drawings (Isometrics, composites, plans, sections, and elevations)
  • Preparing and reviewing engineering studies and technical reports
  • Performing independent reviews of work performed by others including calculations and drawing preparation
  • Coordinating and providing guidance to other engineers, project managers, client personnel, and suppliers to ensure a complete and timely design
  • Performing reviews of existing facilities to propose upgrades and replacements, and presenting findings and recommendations to clients and peers
  • Develop your career via peer-learning through sharing of knowledge with other experienced engineers by way of S&L’s systems of process and associated “Communities of Practice.”
  • Provide guidance as a mentor in the development of less experienced engineers.
  • Working directly with customers, interfacing with the commercial sales team, providing oversight and direction to others within the project team
  • There is potential for travel to client and vendor offices for design reviews and to plant site locations for construction coordination, field verification of designs, or supporting facility commissioning

This position is based on a hybrid work schedule and will require in-office work 3 days per week.

Essential skills and experience:

  • BSME from an ABET Engineering Accreditation Commission-approved program is required; MSME preferred.
  • Ten or more years of experience in the design of mechanical engineering systems for non-commercial, heavy industrial plants (power, oil & gas, or chemical), with a focus on integrated, detailed system design for new plants, modifications, or replacements; Experience must include the selection of equipment, piping materials, control philosophy, and the preparation of performance sizing calculations and specifications.
  • Three or more years of experience in leading an engineering design team through all phases of a project design.
  • Technically knowledgeable of available equipment and proven pre‑engineered systems to execute systems design.
  • Able to create design schematics, such as flow diagrams and P&IDs, using computer design software.
  • Experience with serving as firm/client liaison in a support or lead engineering role.
  • Experience in reviewing design drawings created by others.
  • PE license or ability to earn a PE license is required.

Valued but not required skills and experience:

  • Construction and start‑up experience a plus.
  • Commissioning experience a plus.

  • We also value additional learning, such as a minor, certificate, or other experience in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Software Engineering, or related fields that enables effective oversight of automation and agentic AI‑enabled engineering workflows.
