Summary: Under general direction, incumbent assigns and monitors the work of garage personnel to include heavy equipment technicians and mechanic assistants. Incumbents review and assign repair orders, assist garage personnel in troubleshooting problems and assist in the essential duties of a heavy equipment technician. Also, incumbent will oversee emission testing of vehicles and respond to accidents and emergency road calls.

Essential Functions:

  • Assigns and supervises workloads of heavy equipment mechanics and mechanic assistants.
  • Collects and reviews inspection reports and writes out repair orders.
  • Inspects all vehicles and buses before and after repair. Determines if vehicles and buses are safe for operational use on the road or if additional service is necessary.
  • Responds to emergency road calls including on-site assessment of medical situations, vehicle damage, and safety hazards; ensures accident reports are completed and the Department of Public Safety is notified; photographs accident scenes; and determines alternate transportation requirements to meet needs of the situation.
  • Supervises emission testing including calibration of vehicle opacity meters as required by State law. Serves as a designated fleet emissions co-agent for the Washington School District.
  • Assists Vehicle and Equipment Maintenance Supervisor with performance evaluations on heavy equipment technician and mechanic assistants.
  • Coordinates annual bus inspections with Department of Public Safety including performing or assigning vehicle repairs to comply with State laws governing transportation of children.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or general equivalency diploma (G.E.D.).
  • two years of technical training in automotive or heavy equipment maintenance and five years experience as a heavy equipment mechanic responsible for working on both gas and diesel internal combustion engines; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.
  • Obtain and maintain a valid Arizona Identity Verified Prints (IVP) Fingerprint Clearance Card (AZ IVP FPCC).

Knowledge and Skills Required:

  • Gas and diesel internal combustion engines including electrical systems, heating and cooling systems, brake systems, etc.;
  • Tools and equipment used in repairing gas and diesel internal combustion engines;
  • Assigning and monitoring the work of others;
  • Repairing gas and diesel internal combustion engines including electrical systems, heating and cooling systems, brake systems, etc.;
  • Operating tools and equipment used in repairing gas and diesel internal combustion engines;
  • Interpersonal communication skills while interacting with supervisors, staff, students, etc. to exchange information.

Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to sit, climb or balance, and taste or smell. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Working Conditions:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to fumes or airborne particles and outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to risk of electrical shock. The employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; toxic or caustic chemicals; extreme cold; extreme heat; and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
