Job summary

Core & Main is seeking a skilled Lead Mechanic to deliver high-quality HDPE piping solutions and perform specialized fusion operations in the field. You will respond to critical repair needs, work with leading equipment, and ensure every installation meets safety and quality standards.

In this hands-on role, you will diagnose and repair hydraulic and electrical systems, read manuals and schematics, and travel to sites for outages and training, while maintaining equipment and records.

Qualifications

• Experience diagnosing, repairing and maintaining McElroy fusion equipment or similar hydraulic/electrical construction gear.
• Knowledge of polyethylene pipe fusion equipment, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting and repair procedures.
• Ability to read technical manuals, hydraulic schematics and electrical diagrams.

Responsibilities

• Prepare records on maintenance and fuel levels of equipment.
• Repair and maintain hydraulic and power equipment.
• Inspect and prepare equipment for rental shipment.
• Travel to job sites for field service and training as required.

Major Tasks, Responsibilities and Key Accountabilities

• Prepares accurate records on maintenance, repairs and fuel levels of equipment.
• Maintains all decals, safety warnings and company ID stickers.
• Completes work orders for internal and external repairs.
• Repairs power and mechanical equipment.
• Maintains company vehicles.
• Checks and refuels equipment.
• Undertakes complex repair and maintenance projects.
• Reports safety violations to supervisor.
• Prepares equipment for rental shipment, inspects equipment for damages when returned.

Qualifications

• Must be 21 years of age
• Minimum of 3 years of experience diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining McElroy fusion equipment or comparable hydraulic and electrically operated construction equipment.
• Demonstrated knowledge of polyethylene pipe fusion equipment, including preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair procedures.
• Proficient in diagnosing and repairing hydraulic systems, including pumps, valves, cylinders, hoses, and related components.
• Proficient in diagnosing and repairing electrical systems, including wiring, control circuits, sensors, switches, and electronic components.
• Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, hydraulic schematics, electrical diagrams, and manufacturer service documentation.
• Strong mechanical aptitude with the ability to safely operate diagnostic tools and shop equipment.
• Valid driver's license with a satisfactory driving record.
• Ability to lift and move equipment and components in accordance with company safety standards.
• Willingness and ability to travel overnight as required to support field service operations, attend manufacturer training programs, and fulfill other job-related responsibilities.
• Ability to successfully complete required McElroy equipment training and maintain applicable certifications.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience servicing diesel-powered, hydraulic, and electro-hydraulic equipment in the utility, pipeline, or construction industries.
• Ability to lift, carry, and move equipment and materials in accordance with company safety standards.
• McElroy equipment training and/or certification.
• OSHA safety training and other applicable industry certifications.
• Experience in underground utility, pipeline, natural gas, water, wastewater, telecommunications, mining, or construction‑related industries.
• Mechanical field experience.
• Additional industry‑specific safety, equipment, or operator certifications.

Environmental Job Requirements

• Typically in an environment with regular exposure to factors such as temperature extremes, moving machinery, loud noises, and fumes, which may cause noticeable discomfort or a moderate risk of accident or illness.
• Requires intermittent periods during which continuous physical exertion is required, such as walking, standing, stooping, climbing, lifting, and maneuvering material or equipment, some of which may be heavy (50+ pounds) or awkward.
• Some traveling to job sites to maintain equipment
• Overnights may be 1-2 days/time, up to 2-4 days, dependent on the severity of the repair
