Lead Manufacturing Engineer, CNC Machining
Long Beach, LA
We are working with an exciting Deep Tech company that are developing advanced thermal-management systems built around high-speed, electrically driven turbomachinery.
The company is seeking a Lead Manufacturing Engineer to help establish and scale its internal CNC machining capability. You will support precision-machined rotor hardware, casings and structural components as they progress from initial prototypes into repeatable production.
This is a hands-on position combining CNC process development, design for manufacturability and machine-shop strategy within a fast-moving engineering environment.
Responsibilities:
- Develop and execute the strategy for an internal CNC machine shop.
- Establish machining processes, equipment standards, workforce requirements and production systems.
- Provide DFM feedback covering GD&T, datum structures, tolerances and overall machinability.
- Develop, troubleshoot and improve CNC programs, setups and processes for mills, lathes and multi-axis machines.
- Create manufacturing process plans, standard operating procedures and inspection plans.
- Design workholding and fixturing for complex, high-precision components.
- Investigate non-conforming hardware and lead root-cause and corrective-action activities.
- Support the selection, installation and qualification of machine tools, cutting tools and metrology equipment.
- Work closely with design, manufacturing and quality teams to move hardware from prototype into repeatable production.
Required Qualifications:
- At least five years of experience in machining, manufacturing engineering or a closely related discipline.
- Experience developing CNC machining processes for complex, tight-tolerance components.
- Working knowledge of CNC milling, turning and multi-axis machining.
- Strong understanding of GD&T in accordance with ASME Y14.5.
- Experience with tolerance stack-up analysis and complex engineering drawings.
- Ability to work effectively with limited documentation in a prototype or fast-paced manufacturing environment.
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering or equivalent practical experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
- CAD/CAM proficiency using Siemens NX, Mastercam or a comparable platform.
- Experience designing machining fixtures and workholding.
- Knowledge of dimensional inspection and metrology methods.
- Experience manufacturing impellers, rotors, casings or other turbomachinery components.
- Experience with large vertical turning lathe operations.
- Background working with aerospace, rotating equipment, cryogenic or high-pressure hardware.
- Experience introducing lean manufacturing or continuous-improvement practices.
- Previous experience helping build or scale a machine shop within a startup or high-growth environment.
