Job Summary
Responsible for high voltage, medium voltage, and low voltage transmission and distribution line designs for all operating companies in Avangrid Networks. Line designs include structural or electrical calculations, routing, and preparation of engineering drawings. The electric delivery system in Maine contains approximately 2,600 miles of transmission lines and 317 substations. The electric delivery system in New York contains approximately 5,600 miles of transmission lines and 621 substations. The electric delivery system in Connecticut contains approximately 130 miles of transmission lines and 28 bulk electric supply substations. Position reports to the Unit Manager Line Projects but will work day-to-day in a cross-functional project team and support project needs as dictated by the NYSEG project manager(s).
Key Responsibilities
- Capital project engineering performance including all phases such as scoping and budgeting, conceptual engineering, contract management and design, engineering design, construction, and closeout.
- Lead and create new conceptual designs and oversee the work of external detailed designers.
- Proactively identify and perform special projects and studies that innovatively solve unique and complex problems with broad impact to the business.
- Develop alternate methods or design concepts to resolve unique problems or to improve processes/services.
- Solve unique and complex engineering problems and identify innovative solutions.
- Oversee engineering studies to evaluate equipment and system performance and analyze operational issues in support of system reliability and operational efficiency.
- Develop and validate information needed for engineering analyses and applying engineering judgment to solve technical problems.
- Ensure all engineering designs meet applicable company, local, state, and national codes and standards.
- Represent the company on regional and national committees when needed.
- Utilize knowledge to influence and guide department engineers.
- Provide technical leadership in complex projects with wide departmental impact.
- Mentor, develop and support the team in technical skills.
- Ability to collaborate across departments.
- Liaison/ direct contractors on company policy, standards, and best practices.
- Work independently with little supervision for Lead Engineers, including influencing and guiding department engineers and providing technical leadership in complex projects.
Required Qualifications
Technical Skills/Competencies
- Theoretical engineering knowledge across planning, operations, engineering design, analytics, modeling and calculation; global view of the business and cross-functional collaboration.
- Practical engineering experience including planning, operations and engineering design, construction; ability to perform economic analyses of engineering alternatives, develop business cases, and defend in front of stakeholders.
- Engineering documentation: ability to document and interpret engineering information.
- Ability to review and approve engineering work by others to ensure compliance with standards, specifications, and contract requirements.
- Knowledge of regulatory and compliance environment (local, state, and federal standards).
- Experience/Training:
- Engineering/professional qualification or equivalent experience
- Experience in project delivery, as necessary
- Relevant network construction and operational experience, including field inspections
- Computer literacy
- Required Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Construction Management
- Professional Engineering license preferred
