LEAD LIFEGUARD - LAKE SPIVEY

JOB TITLE: LEAD LIFEGUARD (SEASONAL)

DEPARTMENT: PARKS & RECREATION/ - 4TH District - LAKE SPIVEY

MUST MEET MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Must be 16 years of age or older. Previous Lifeguard experience. Must be available for work on weekends and holidays. Must possess a valid license or a picture I.D. and an original Social Security card at the time of interview. May be required to work up to 25 hours per week-days and times may vary.

NOTICE: If hired as a lifeguard, the applicant must pay for and attend a lifeguard training class ($60.00) and purchase a lifeguard uniform ($20.00). To be employed by Clayton County, potential employee must pass and receive the American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification. Preference will be given to applicants who already hold this certification.

NATURE OF WORK: Work involves performing duties requiring independence, accountability, and responsibility. Lifeguards will also be responsible for testing water levels and safety equipment on a daily basis. Employment traditionally consists of up to 5 months of seasonal work.

SOME OF THE ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES INCLUDE:

• Perform water rescues as prescribed by the American National Red Cross Training Program; perform first aid/CPR/AED skills as necessary or as required by supervisor; be responsible for the overall safety of visitors using the facilities;
• be responsible for the conduct and performance of the lifeguards; make certain all necessary lifeguards are in their positions before allowing swimmers to enter the lake; schedule any or all facility staff when required;
• perform in-service training, physical conditioning drills, rescues, and emergency procedure drills;
• complete neat and concise written reports as needed to include, but not limited to, incident reports, training reports, and a daily activity log.

DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

• Ability to successfully complete the American National Red Cross Lifeguard Training Program which includes water rescue skills, First Aid, CPR for infant, child, adult and two-rescuer, and Oxygen Administration using a bag-valve-mask.
• Ability to swim 300 yards, continuously, using the following strokes: 100 yards of front crawl using rhythmic breathing and a stabilizing propellant kick, 100 yards breast stroke and 100 yards of either front crawl using rhythmic breathing or breaststroke or a combination of both.
• Ability to swim 20 yards, surface dive to a depth of 7-10 feet, retrieve a 10-pound object, return to the surface and swim back 20 yards with object on your chest and both hands on the object (Must complete within 1 minute 40 seconds and cannot use swim goggles);
• You must also be able to tread water without using your hands for two minutes (hands must be placed under armpits);
• Perform all required skills with 100% accuracy and pass a written test with a score of at least 80%; ability to supervise others and maintain an effective working relationship with fellow employees and supervisors; deal courteously and firmly with the public; demonstrate good judgement, tact, and courtesy; maintain good physical health; have excellent people skills.
