Job summary

AdventHealth Daytona Beach is seeking a dedicated laboratory technician to join our night shift team. You will perform venipuncture and microtainer collection, prepare specimens for testing, and help ensure accurate labeling and timely reporting.

You’ll work in a fast-paced lab, adhering to safety policies and following the Chemical Hygiene plan. Ideal candidates demonstrate strong organization, can multitask, communicate clearly, and work well in a team.

Qualifications

• Phlebotomy and specimen collection experience.
• Ability to work independently and in a team.
• Strong organizational and multitasking abilities.
• Proficient in English with good written and verbal communication.

Responsibilities

• May perform venipuncture and microtainer collection accurately.
• Ensures specimens are correctly labeled and orders are received properly.
• Processes and prepares laboratory specimens for testing, including centrifugation.
• May receive and set up primary specimen cultures, inoculating petri dishes for bacterial growth.
• May document equipment temperatures and perform preventive maintenance.
• Monitors reference lab reports and requests overdue results.
• Maintains inventory and places supply orders as needed.
• Performs desk duties such as faxing results and scheduling recollects.
• Assists with staff schedule preparation and cross-training in the lab.
• Follows safety policies including PPE use, handwashing, and chemical handling.
• Demonstrates knowledge of Chemical Hygiene and Infection Control policies.
• May perform cytopreparatory staining and accessions surgical cases.
• May perform blood component processing and use of transfusion systems.
• May perform point of care testing and related quality control.

Job Description:

• May perform venipuncture and microtainer collection accurately and efficiently.
• Ensures specimens are correctly labeled and orders are received properly.
• Processes and prepares laboratory specimens for testing, including separating specimens by centrifugation.
• May receive and set up primary specimen cultures, inoculating petri dishes for bacterial growth.
• May document equipment temperatures, perform preventative maintenance, and ensure proper functioning of laboratory equipment.
• Monitors reference lab reports and requests results that are overdue.
• Maintains appropriate inventory levels and places supply orders as needed.
• Performs desk duties, including faxing results, answering phones, reprinting labels, and rescheduling recollects.
• Assists with staff schedule preparation and cross-training within the laboratory.
• Follows appropriate safety policies including the appropriate use of PPE, handwashing, and hazardous chemical handling.
• Demonstrates understanding and adheres to Chemical Hygiene plan and Infection Control policies.
• May perform cytopreparatory staining and accessions surgical cases with knowledge of anatomy.
• May perform blood and/or blood component processing, storing, shipping, modifying and selecting compatible products using a validated Transfusion Information System.
• May perform point of care testing, and associated, quality control, maintenance, troubleshooting, documentation and result reporting.
• Receives, processes, and transports patient specimens, including centrifugation and aliquoting sample types.
• May include transport of hazardous waste from the point of generation to a designated secure storage area; employee will be required to complete initial training (prior to handling hazardous waste) and refresher training to include proper handling and transport of hazardous waste, and proper selection, use and disposal of personal protective equipment.
• Mentors, trains new staff and students, and performs competency, acting as a preceptor when assigned.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
