Job summary

Northside Hospital seeks a Laboratory Technical Assistant to manage duties, perform specimen collection and processing for neonate to geriatric patients, and support lab data systems. The role requires phlebotomy training or equivalent experience, strong teamwork, and careful handling of specimens.

Ideal candidates will have a high school diploma or higher, color vision, and good communication skills. Work hours are 3pm–11:30pm in a hospital lab setting.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent plus;
• Six months phlebotomy training or two years experience in specimen collections/processing; or a two-year degree in chemical/physical/biological science or health-related specialty.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Ability to follow accurate specimen handling and clerical procedures.
• Must have fine finger dexterity and visual ability to locate blood vessels.
• Effective communication skills, both written and oral.
• Color vision acuity required; pass color-acuity screening.
• Preferred: knowledge of medical lab terminology; familiarity with computer systems; service delivery training.

Responsibilities

Responsible for the assignment of all duties and tasks performed by the Laboratory Technical Assistant. As necessary, performs specimen collection and processing for neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients. Assists in handling laboratory data collection systems and equipment to ensure proper ordering, cancellations and charges for all accounts.

Qualifications

REQUIRED:1. High school diploma or equivalent, PLUS;

a. Six (6) months clinical training in an approved phlebotomy training program, OR b. Two (2) years experience in specimen collections, specimen processing and specimen requisitioning for a clinical laboratory or health care delivery system

or, c. Hold at least a two (2) year degree in chemical, physical,

or biological science or a health related specialty.

2. Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

3. Ability to understand and apply accurate procedures in specimen handling and clerical processing.

4. Must have sufficient feeling in fingers and visual ability to locate patients' blood vessels.

5. Ability to communicate effectively, and must possess good written and oral communication skills.

6. Color vision acuity is required to safely perform the duties of this position.

7. All applicants must submit to and pass a Color-Acuity screening Test.

PREFERRED:1. Ability to use and understand medical laboratory terminology. 2. Demonstrated knowledge of computer systems and design. 3. Demonstrated public relations skills and service delivery training.

Work Hours:

3pm-11:30pm
