Job summary

AdventHealth in Orlando, FL seeks a Laboratory Assistant/Phlebotomist to join a busy lab. You will perform venipuncture, handle specimen labeling, prepare samples for testing, and support cytology and transfusion-related activities.

The role emphasizes accuracy, safety, and teamwork in a fast-paced environment. Requires phlebotomy skills, knowledge of LIS and MS Office, and the ability to work with English-speaking staff and patients.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • 2+ years in a laboratory setting preferred.
  • Phlebotomy experience including venipuncture and capillary collections.

Responsibilities

  • May perform venipuncture and microtainer collection accurately and efficiently.
  • Ensure specimens are correctly labeled and orders received properly.
  • Process and prepare laboratory specimens for testing, including centrifugation.
  • May set up primary specimen cultures and inoculate for bacterial growth.
  • Document equipment temperatures and perform preventative maintenance.
  • Monitor reference lab reports and manage overdue results.
  • Maintain inventory levels and place supply orders as needed.
  • Assist with staff schedule preparation and cross-training.
  • Follow safety policies and PPE use; adhere to Chemical Hygiene plan.
  • May perform cytopreparatory staining and accessions surgical cases.
  • May handle blood and blood component processing and transfusion data.
  • May perform point-of-care testing and related QC and reporting.
  • Receives, processes, and transports specimens including hazardous waste handling.

Job Description:

Schedule: Monday -Friday 0700-1530

  • May perform venipuncture and microtainer collection accurately and efficiently.
  • Ensures specimens are correctly labeled and orders are received properly.
  • Processes and prepares laboratory specimens for testing, including separating specimens by centrifugation.
  • May receive and set up primary specimen cultures, inoculating petri dishes for bacterial growth.
  • May document equipment temperatures, perform preventative maintenance, and ensure proper functioning of laboratory equipment.
  • Monitors reference lab reports and requests results that are overdue.
  • Maintains appropriate inventory levels and places supply orders as needed.
  • Performs desk duties, including faxing results, answering phones, reprinting labels, and rescheduling recollects.
  • Assists with staff schedule preparation and cross‑training within the laboratory.
  • Follows appropriate safety policies including the appropriate use of PPE, handwashing, and hazardous chemical handling.
  • Demonstrates understanding and adheres to Chemical Hygiene plan and Infection Control policies.
  • May perform cytopreparatory staining and accessions surgical cases with knowledge of anatomy.
  • May perform blood and/or blood component processing, storing, shipping, modifying and selecting compatible products using a validated Transfusion Information System.
  • May perform point of care testing, and associated, quality control, maintenance, troubleshooting, documentation and result reporting.
  • Receives, processes, and transports patient specimens, including centrifugation and aliquoting sample types.
  • May include transport of hazardous waste from the point of generation to a designated secure storage area; employee will be required to complete initial training (prior to handling hazardous waste) and refresher training to include proper handling and transport of hazardous waste, and proper selection, use and disposal of personal protective equipment.
  • Mentors, trains new staff and students, and performs competency, acting as a preceptor when assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
