We are seeking an experienced Lead HVAC Technician to provide technical leadership and hands-on expertise in the installation, service, maintenance, and repair of HVAC systems across commercial, residential, and healthcare facilities. This position is responsible for overseeing field operations, leading technicians and apprentices, ensuring project success, maintaining safety and quality standards, and delivering outstanding customer service.
The ideal candidate is a highly skilled HVAC professional with strong troubleshooting abilities, leadership experience, and a commitment to safety, quality workmanship, and team development.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and perform HVAC installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair activities for heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems.
- Diagnose and resolve complex mechanical, electrical, controls, refrigeration, and airflow issues.
- Inspect, test, and evaluate HVAC equipment, wiring, controls, ductwork, refrigerant systems, and related components.
- Conduct preventive maintenance and system performance evaluations to maximize equipment reliability and efficiency.
- Read and interpret blueprints, specifications, schematics, construction documents, and technical drawings.
Leadership & Project Management
- Lead field teams and coordinate daily work assignments to ensure projects are completed safely, efficiently, and on schedule.
- Serve as the primary field contact for customers, subcontractors, and project stakeholders.
- Monitor project progress, labor utilization, material requirements, and overall job performance.
- Review completed work to ensure compliance with company standards, customer expectations, and applicable codes.
- Resolve technical issues and project challenges while maintaining productivity and quality.
Training & Development
- Mentor, train, and support HVAC technicians and apprentices.
- Promote technical skill development, safety awareness, and adherence to company procedures.
- Foster a positive team environment focused on accountability, continuous improvement, and operational excellence.
Safety & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with OSHA regulations, NFPA 70E requirements, lockout/tagout procedures, PPE standards, and company safety policies.
- Maintain a safe work environment by identifying hazards and implementing corrective actions.
- Complete required documentation including service reports, inspections, work orders, and equipment recommendations.
Customer Service
- Build and maintain strong customer relationships through professional communication and problem-solving.
- Manage customer expectations and provide recommendations for equipment repairs, upgrades, and preventative maintenance solutions.
- Respond to emergency service requests and travel to customer sites as needed.
Required Qualifications
- State Journeyman HVAC License required; Master HVAC License preferred where applicable.
- Minimum of 5 years of commercial HVAC installation, maintenance, and service experience.
- Proven experience leading HVAC technicians, apprentices, or field crews.
- Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic skills for commercial HVAC and refrigeration systems.
- Ability to work independently and lead multiple projects simultaneously.
- Knowledge of HVAC systems, controls, refrigeration, electrical components, and building automation systems.
- Working knowledge of OSHA regulations, NFPA 70E, and HVAC safety best practices.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, technical drawings, and specifications.
- Excellent communication, customer service, and leadership skills.
- Strong organizational and time-management abilities.
- Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
- Ability to pass a criminal background check and drug screening.
- Must provide personal hand tools.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master HVAC License.
- Healthcare, hospital, or critical environment HVAC experience.
- Experience with commercial refrigeration systems.
- Building automation systems (BAS) or controls experience.
- Additional HVAC certifications, EPA certifications, or manufacturer training.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to climb ladders, work from heights, and access mechanical spaces.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, and work in varying indoor and outdoor conditions.
- Ability to respond to emergency calls and travel outside the Lexington area as needed.
