Job summary

Peralta Community College District in Oakland, CA seeks a Lead Groundsworker-Gardener to supervise a small grounds crew, plan daily tasks, and ensure high-quality maintenance of lawns, trees, and shrubs.

The role requires two years of professional grounds-keeping experience, a valid CA driver's license, and the ability to work with diverse campus communities; reference/background checks and possibly a medical exam may be required.

Qualifications

• Two (2) years of continuous full-time paid professional experience performing commercial grounds-keeping and gardening duties.
• Must possess a current valid California Department of Motor Vehicle Driver's License.
• Must be insurable under Peralta Community College District's current insurance policy.
• Understanding of, sensitivity to and respect for the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability and ethnic backgrounds of Peralta Colleges’ students, faculty, staff and community.

Responsibilities

• Plans and assigns work of Groundsworker-Gardeners, student help, and/or the seasonal labor.
• Maintains records of equipment use and chemicals used.
• Schedules watering programs.
• Checks work of crew members and keeps supervisor informed of any special problems that arise with equipment or personnel.
• Performs minor maintenance and repair to power mowers, edgers, rototillers, and vacuum sweepers.
• Performs all of the duties contained in the essential and marginal job functions of the Groundsworker - Gardener position.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Job description

Under general supervision, the Lead Groundsworker-Gardener leads others in grounds and gardening related work.

Examples of duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Serves as lead worker of a small grounds crew.
• Inspects assigned areas to detect grounds maintenance problems and checks for vandalism.
• Plans and assigns work of Groundsworker-Gardeners, student help, and/or the seasonal labor.
• Maintains records of equipment use and chemicals used.
• Schedules watering programs.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of:

• safety procedures, methods, supplies, and tools used in planting, cultivating, and caring for lawns, shrubs, and trees
• gardening materials, tools, and equipment
• common plant diseases, ant insect pests, and approved method of materials used for controlling an eradication
• District's educational mission
• plant cultivation, irrigation, spraying, and fertilization
• operation and maintenance of motorized equipment used in grounds maintenance work
• using computer to input/update work orders
• soil preparation

Ability to:

• perform skilled grounds maintenance work
• operate and maintain power mowers and other grounds maintenance equipment
• establish and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the work
• safely use the hand and power tools of gardening and grounds-keeping work
• perform heavy physical labor
• follow verbal and written directions
• schedule, assign, and supervise work of crew members
