Job summary

S&C Electric Company is seeking a Lead Generator Specialist to join our Electrical and Mechanical Labs team in Chicago. You will improve maintenance programs for short-circuit generators, relate controls and auxiliary equipment, and collaborate across cross-functional teams to drive innovation.

You will coach teammates, develop test methods, and report results to stakeholders, reporting to the Senior Manager – NJC Laboratories. A technical degree with relevant experience is required.

Qualifications

  • Technical degree with 3+ years in generator specialist or generator field services OR high school diploma with 5+ years in generator field services.
  • Minimum 3 years in power plant maintenance, turbine generator maintenance, or generator drive maintenance in industrial/utility/oil & gas settings.
  • Experience with electrical testing and assessments of generator stators, rotors, windings, insulation.

Responsibilities

  • Perform preventative maintenance on short-circuit generators and drive systems.
  • Develop maintenance strategies for generator components and instrumentation.
  • Lead troubleshooting and implement solutions for generator-related issues.
  • Conduct electrical and mechanical testing (RSO, PI, DLRO, ELCID, hi-pot, partial discharge, tan-delta).
  • Set up and operate testing equipment with safety adherence.
  • Collect, analyze, and report test data and measurements.
  • Prepare detailed test and project reports with methodology and conclusions.
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards and internal quality management systems.
  • Coach and mentor team members to develop skills.
  • Identify opportunities to improve test methods, equipment, and processes.

Compensation

At S&C, we are dedicated to providing competitive and equitable compensation for all our team members, and we are committed to transparency in our pay practices. The estimated annual base salary range for this position is $78,298- $103,739.02.Individual pay within this salary range is determined by several compensable factors, including performance, knowledge, job-related skills and experience, and relevant education or training. This role is also eligible for S&C’s annual incentive plan (AIP), subject to eligibility criteria.

Are you passionate aboutElectrical and Mechanical Laboratories?S&C Electric Company is seeking a dynamic individual to join our Electrical and Mechanical Labs team. As a Lead Generator Specialist,you’ll be crucial in ensuring continued innovation and supporting our diverse team.

The Lead Generator Specialist is responsible for improving maintenance programs for the lab’s short-circuit generators, their controls, and related auxiliary equipment. This role involves collaborating with cross-functional teams, developing test equipment, test methods, analyzing test data, and providing insights to support product development and quality improvement efforts. The Specialist is expected to coach other team members to ensure their development, and skills retention in the lab. The Specialist will report to Senior Manager – NJC Laboratories.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform technical inspections on, create plans for and lead preventative maintenance of, and assess the performance of short-circuit generators and their drive systems.
  • Develop preventative maintenance strategies, assessment strategies, and implement those strategies for generator stators, rotors, electric windings, insulation, controls, and instrumentation.
  • Lead efforts to troubleshoot issues, and apply standard methods and techniques to solve the issues related to generator stators, rotors, electric windings, insulation, controls, and instrumentation. Collaborate with other teams and industry experts to develop solutions and improvements.
  • Conduct electrical and mechanical testing, including RSO, PI, DLRO, ELCID, hi-pot, partial discharge, and tan-delta testing.
  • Set up and operate testing equipment, ensuring adherence to safety protocols.
  • Accurately collect test data and measurements. Analyze and interpret measurements using statistical methods and engineering tools to draw meaningful conclusions, and make data-driven recommendations.
  • Prepare detailed test reports and project reports, including methodology, results, and analysis. Communicate findings and recommendations to stakeholders.
  • Ensure project activities comply with industry standards, safety regulations, and internal quality management systems.
  • Develop and manage plans for assessment and maintanence of the lab’s test equipment.
  • Write functional specifications, project requirements, test plans, design documentation, and training documentation.
  • Coach and mentor other team members to support their career growth and to ensure skills retention in the lab.
  • Identify opportunities to enhance test methodology, equipment, and processes. Drive continuous improvement initiatives in the test lab.
  • Understand and comply with all applicable Company policies and rules.
What you’ll Need To Succeed:
  • Technical degree with a minimum three years of experience in a generator specialist or generator field services role OR High school diploma with a minimum five years of experience in a generator specialist or generator field services role.
  • Minimum of three years of experience in power plant maintenance, turbine generator maintenance, and/or generator drive maintenance in an industrial, utility or oil and gas setting.
  • Excellent understanding of electrical generators, including generator design, maintenance methodologies, controls, protection, and instrumentation.
  • 3+ years of experience in electrical testing and assessments of generator stators, rotors, windings, and insulation.
  • Proficient with relevant lab instrumentation, scopes, DMMs, high-voltage, and high-current measurements.
  • Adherence to safety protocols and commitment to maintaining a safe work environment.
  • Meticulous approach to data collection and documentation to ensure accuracy and precision.
  • Ability to coach and mentor other team members, setting work and testing standards for others in the department.
  • Ability to work in a team environment, contribute ideas, and support team goals.
Preferred
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum of three years of experience in turbine generator maintenance, or power plant equipment maintenance, installation, and/or commissioning.
