Google DeepMind is hiring a Research Scientist to lead governance research and risk modeling for the Frontier Safety Framework. You will drive qualitative and quantitative modeling of AI risks and represent the program in governance and model launch processes.

The role bridges risk assessment, governance innovation, and collaboration with policy teams to advance safety and trusted deployment of frontier AI while delivering impact for billions of users.

Qualifications

• PhD in Economics, Philosophy, or STEM or equivalent practical experience.
• 3 years of research in frontier AI safety or governance (risk modeling, safety frameworks, or alignment evaluations).
• Preferred: ability to communicate complex topics to leads, governance bodies and policy experts.

Responsibilities

• Develop FSF research and updates to adapt to safety, governance, and policy opportunities.
• Model pre-mitigation risks to ground empirical risk assessment and safeguard development.
• Assess safeguards' effectiveness and adequacy for further development and deployment of frontier models.
• Manage a team of researchers and cross-functional collaborators; represent the risk assessment program in governance.
• Write external safety reports and collaborate with policy/governance teams to strengthen frontier AI governance.
