Job summary

Global Medical Response is seeking a Lead Fleet Mechanic to lead advanced maintenance for ambulances and fleet vehicles, diagnose complex systems, and uphold safety and quality standards in the shop. You will guide a team of mechanics, manage work orders, and ensure compliance with company standards.

You will mentor technicians, participate in on-call rotations, and support the Fleet Manager with staff development, scheduling, and training initiatives while delivering reliable fleet performance.

Qualifications

  • Five years of automotive or fleet maintenance experience.
  • Journeyman-level mechanical experience.
  • Strong electrical diagnostic experience and ability to read schematics.
  • Current valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Must possess a complete set of personal mechanic tools.
  • ASE Certifications A1-A8 (including Brake Certification ASE or equivalent).
  • ASE 609 Certification or equivalent.

Responsibilities

  • Perform advanced preventative maintenance, diagnostics, repairs, and inspections on ambulances and fleet vehicles.
  • Troubleshoot and repair electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and drivetrain systems.
  • Read and interpret service manuals, technical bulletins, and wiring schematics.
  • Ensure all repairs are completed in accordance with manufacturer specifications, regulatory requirements, and company standards.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records, repair documentation, and work orders.
  • Serve as the lead resource and technical mentor for mechanics and technicians.
  • Provide guidance, coaching, and on-the-job training to shop personnel.
  • Assist the Fleet Manager with employee development, performance feedback, and training initiatives.
  • Support employee scheduling and workload prioritization to ensure timely completion of maintenance activities.
  • Lead by example through professionalism, accountability, safety, and high-quality workmanship.

Lead Fleet Mechanic
Position Summary

The Lead Mechanic is a working leader responsible for performing advanced vehicle maintenance, repair, and diagnostic services while providing day-to-day leadership and guidance to fleet mechanics. This position serves as the technical expert within the shop, ensuring maintenance activities are completed safely, efficiently, and to company standards. The Lead Mechanic promotes accountability, quality workmanship, teamwork, and continuous improvement while supporting the Fleet Manager in achieving operational and fleet reliability goals.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Technical Maintenance and Repair
  • Perform advanced preventative maintenance, diagnostics, repairs, and inspections on ambulances and fleet vehicles.

Leadership and Oversight

  • Assist the Fleet Manager with employee development, performance feedback, and training initiatives.
  • Support employee scheduling and workload prioritization to ensure timely completion of maintenance activities.
  • Lead by example through professionalism, accountability, safety, and high-quality workmanship.
Quality Assurance
  • Conduct routine spot-checks and quality reviews of repairs and maintenance completed by mechanics and technicians.
  • Verify repairs are completed correctly, safely, and in compliance with departmental standards.
  • Identify performance trends, training opportunities, and process improvements.
  • Ensure vehicles released to service meet all safety and operational requirements.
  • Promote a culture of quality, consistency, and attention to detail throughout the fleet maintenance operation.
Operations and Administration
  • Assist the Fleet Manager in implementing and improving fleet maintenance programs and procedures.
  • Maintain inventory control and coordinate parts ordering as needed.
  • Utilize fleet maintenance software systems for work order management, data entry, and reporting.
  • Monitor shop organization, cleanliness, and safety compliance.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation to support emergency fleet maintenance needs.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum five (5) years of automotive or fleet maintenance experience.
  • Journeyman-level mechanical experience.
  • Strong electrical diagnostic experience and ability to read and interpret schematics.
  • Current valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Must possess a complete set of personal mechanic tools.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous lead, supervisory, or mentoring experience in a fleet maintenance environment.
  • Fleet maintenance experience with emergency vehicles, ambulances, medium-duty trucks, or commercial fleets.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience with computerized fleet maintenance management systems.
  • Demonstrated commitment to workplace safety and continuous improvement.

  • Ability to coach, mentor, and develop technicians.
  • Exceptional troubleshooting and diagnostic capabilities.

  • Working knowledge of DOT, OSHA, and applicable fleet maintenance regulations.
  • Ability to make sound decisions and resolve problems independently.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 75 pounds.
  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, and working underneath vehicles.
  • Ability to work in various environmental conditions, including exposure to noise, chemicals, and weather-related elements.
  • Ability to respond to after-hours maintenance needs as part of an on-call rotation.
