Job summary

Laser Technology, Inc. is seeking a Lead Firmware Software Engineer to drive embedded firmware development for laser rangefinders and related systems.

You will balance hands-on coding with leadership of a small firmware team, shaping architecture, reviews, and verification plans while collaborating with hardware, software, and product teams. The ideal candidate has 10+ years in firmware, strong C/C++ skills, experience with low-level drivers, and a proven track record releasing robust products.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering or related technical field.
  • 10+ years of relevant industry experience.
  • Demonstrable product release history.
  • Ability to support all phases of the product development cycle including architecture, design, development, debugging, documentation and validation.
  • Experience with version control systems (GitLab, etc.) and bug tracking tools.
  • Strong background in C/C++ firmware development, including bare metal programming.
  • Strong background in writing low level device drivers (IMU, magnetometer, environmental sensors, ADC, GPIO, SPI, I2C, UART, Bluetooth).
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, draw valid conclusions and implement and test fixes.

Responsibilities

  • Works with cross-functional teams to develop and analyze requirements, architect, implement, test and deploy firmware within timelines.
  • Performs trade-off studies to optimize solutions.
  • Collaborates with hardware engineers to design interfaces between hardware and firmware.
  • Leads software architecture and failure analysis reviews.
  • Communicates product architectures and design proposals to senior management.
  • Drives prototyping, design reviews, code reviews, reliability testing, and verification plans.
  • Documents software with firmware architecture descriptions and detailed algorithms.
  • Performs hands-on debugging, testing and validation to ensure specs are met.
  • Provides timely support for in-house and field service issues.
  • Mentors junior staff and supports new product development and sustaining existing products.

Lead Firmware Software Engineer

Who we need: We are looking for a motivated Lead Firmware Software Engineer to join our Engineering Team.

What you will do: Developing embedded firmware employed on laser rangefinders, speed detection products, and associated manufacturing systems. Drives technical design from concept to release, refines development processes and best practices, and supports sustaining efforts. Provides leadership to more junior members of the team.

This is a hands‑on role with the expectation that the candidate will balance providing leadership to a team of firmware engineers with directly authoring code as one of the contributing members of the same team. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Works with a diverse team of technical and product management functions within the company to develop and analyze requirements, then architect, implement, test and deploy robust firmware solutions within program timelines.
  • Performs trade‑off studies as part of developing optimized solutions.
  • Collaborates with hardware engineers and other engineering staff to evaluate and design the interface between hardware and firmware.
  • Leads software architecture and failure analysis reviews.
  • Effectively communicate product architectures, design proposals and negotiate options at senior management levels.
  • Drives prototyping, design reviews, code reviews, reliability testing, and creation of requirements and verification plans.
  • Documents software by employing best practices related to creation of firmware architecture descriptions, commenting source code, creating command and error code lists, and detailed algorithm descriptions.
  • Performs hands‑on work debugging, troubleshooting, and validation testing to ensure compliance with specifications.
  • Provides timely support for both in‑house and customer field service support issues.
  • Mentors more junior members of the staff.
  • Supports new product development, manufacturing fixturing and tools, and sustaining existing products.

What you Need:

Qualified individuals will have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering or related technical field; or a combination of education, experience, and training.
  • 10+ years of relevant industry experience.
  • Demonstrable product release history.
  • Ability to support all phases of the product development cycle including architecture, design, development, debugging, documentation and validation.
  • Experience with version control systems (GitLab, etc.) and bug tracking tools.
  • Strong background in C/C++ firmware development, including bare metal programming.
  • Strong background in writing low level device drivers (IMU, magnetometer, environmental sensors, ADC, GPIO, SPI, I2C, UART, Bluetooth).
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, draw valid conclusions and implement and test fixes.
  • Proven ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with multiple abstract and concrete variables.
  • Ability to apply mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations, matrix math, linear regression, curve fitting, and low pass filters.
  • Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Outlook and Teams.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Physical Demands of the role include:

  • Qualified individuals must be able to lift up to 15 pounds.
  • Be willing to work in an office environment as well as outside in various weather conditions to conduct tests on new and revised products.
  • Must be able to walk, stand, lift, sit, see, and hear.
