Job summary

Responsibilities

  • Act as lead engineer for a medium-sized job or Deputy Project Field Engineer coordinating activities.
  • Engage in team development via CPM, competency assessment, and feedback.
  • Supervise construction engineering work within a discipline and ensure constructability alignment.
  • Coordinate with design on constructability and subtract/replace parts when needed.
  • Manage material procurement, inclusions of requisitions and substitutions, and equipment.
  • Perform quantity take-off, reporting, and forecasting.
  • Maintain zero-accident safety philosophy across the team.
  • Coordinate field turnover with startup and ensure area readiness.
  • Review and approve inspection test plans and subcontractor submittals.

Job description

Project Overview

Bechtel is partnering with NextDecade to support their vision to provide the world access to lower carbon intensive energy with their Rio Grande LNG (RGLNG) project in Brownsville, Texas. RGLNG is a natural gas liquefaction and export terminal situated on a 984-acre site on the banks of the Brownsville ship channel. The first phase of the RGLNG project consists of three liquefaction trains, two storage tanks, and one marine berth. At full capacity, the five‑train facility will have a production capacity of 27 million tonnes per annum (MTPA).

Job Summary

In this role, you will manage a team and provide field engineering leadership for work planning and packaging, material management, quantity validation, safety and quality control, technical inspection and testing knowledge, and coordination of system turnover and subcontracts. Your oversight will ensure field engineering activities operate safely, are complete, and conform to quality standards and project requirements.

Major Responsibilities
  • Act as lead engineer for a medium‑sized job, coordinating and directing a variety of disciplines, or as Deputy Project Field Engineer, coordinating all activities related to the operation of the assigned operating section.
  • Proactively engage with team development through CPM, competency development/assessment, and feedback.
  • Supervise a broad range of construction engineering work within a specific engineering discipline.
  • Coordinate with design on constructability issues.
  • Manage material procurement, including requisitions for field‑procured materials, material substitution, services, and equipment.
  • Perform quantity take‑off, control, reporting, and forecasting.
  • Ensure zero‑accident philosophy and requirements are implemented and adhered to by all personnel in the operational area.
  • Coordinate between construction and startup to ensure system walkdowns are performed, interface with startup specialists, and assume responsibility for area turnover coordination as determined by the PFE.
  • Review and approve inspection test plans.
  • Coordinate reviews of subcontractor submittals.
Education and Experience Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree (or international equivalent) and 10–13 years of relevant experience, or 14–17 years of relevant work experience.
Required Knowledge and Skills
  • Technical knowledge of a specialized engineering discipline, cost, scheduling, and/or contracts administration related to the construction of heavy industrial or commercial complexes.
  • Work experience as a construction engineer, engineer, or assistant superintendent leading to an understanding of the technical knowledge described above.
  • Demonstrated leadership in a team‑based environment.
  • Knowledge of the Project Environmental, Safety & Health (ES&H) Handbook and Bechtel Core Processes as they relate to the area of responsibility.
  • Familiarity with Bechtel’s Business Ethics Handbook and policies.
  • Prior experience supervising and administering subcontractors; knowledge of Bechtel’s “Zero Accidents” safety program.
  • Computer literate in word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications in accordance with current Bechtel Standard Application Program (BSAP) standards.
  • Knowledge of subcontract responsibilities contained in subcontract documents.
Additional Information

Must be willing to work a flexible schedule as required that may include, but not be limited to, night shift or split shift. Work requires the physical ability to conduct field inspections, including extensive walking in and around a construction site, often in high heat and high humidity conditions, climbing ladders, scaffolding, elevated platforms, uneven surfaces, and confined spaces. Some lifting may be required. Must have the ability to walk into and out of the project (enter/egress) and use appropriate standard issued Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) required for each assigned task (e.g., harness, life vest, lift buckets).
