Job summary

Borealis Fusion is seeking a Senior Experimental Physicist to design and lead the first experimental campaign, turning theory and simulations into a buildable platform. You will work with the CTO and founding team to define machine requirements, subsystems, and diagnostics, while managing vendors and the site plan.

The role offers hybrid work in New York with remote design phase, travel to sites, and a strong opportunity to shape Borealis's experimental program and equipment ownership.

Qualifications

• Hands-on work building or extending a major plasma experiment.
• Experience taking systems from design through commissioning with vendor management.
• Ability to design experiments discriminating hypotheses and quantify uncertainty.

Responsibilities

• Define the experimental campaign requirements with the CTO and translate them into machine and diagnostic specs.
• Design the experimental platform within roadmap constraints and ensure integration of subsystems (vacuum, magnets, power delivery, diagnostics).
• Select and manage major subsystems vendors and provide cost estimates.
• Outline site requirements, safety, permitting, and support site selection.
• Hire and mentor experimentalists and technicians, establishing operating procedures for the lab.
