Job summary

Shook Construction Co. is seeking a senior estimator to lead preconstruction estimating efforts in Ohio. You will assemble bid teams, develop budgets, and assess risks to maximize project profitability.

Responsibilities include bid solicitation, cost analysis, and coordination with vendors and trade partners to ensure a complete scope. A Bachelor’s degree and 5+ years of estimating experience are required, with strong reading of drawings and specs.

Responsibilities

  • Read and interpret drawings and project specifications to ensure complete scope.
  • Prepare comprehensive quantity takeoffs and cost breakdowns with labor, material, and equipment costs.
  • Develop bid package scopes with PM input and assist subcontractor selections.

Job Purpose

Responsible for leading, assembling, and managing estimates, budget controls, and risk assessments during the preconstruction phase for all scopes and disciplines of work. Develop relationships with Vendors and Trade Partners to maximize efficiency and project success.

  • Work with the VP-Preconstruction Services/Director of Preconstruction to establish a bid team with assignments.
  • Coordinating bond requirements with VP-Preconstruction Services.
  • Scheduling pre-bid requirements.
  • Manage the bid solicitation process.
  • Coordinate and manage project-specific MBE/WBE requirements.
  • Read and interpret Drawings and Project Specifications.
  • Creating the Timberline estimate for the input of items by the bid team.
  • Identify project risk and potential impacts.
  • Attend Pre-bid meetings.
  • Review General Conditions, site logistics, schedule, & scope of work.
  • Thoroughly review project plans and specifications and coordinate with teams for complete scope.
  • Perform multi-level estimating techniques on alternative bid delivery systems.
  • Manage Bid Form requirements and assemble final costs.
  • Perform comprehensive quantity takeoffs and associated costs utilizing labor, material, and equipment cost breakdowns.
  • Analyze and secure costs for project-specified items with appropriate subcontractors and vendors.
  • Preparation of the pre-bid construction schedule.
  • Organize and Participate in Drawing / Estimate Reviews.
  • Analyze alternative means and methods to determine the best value for the project.
  • Assist with the direction of bid day requirements.
  • Develop bid package scopes of work and required bid documents with assistance from the Project Manager and Build Team.
  • Define and manage the post-bid analysis/scope review process and assist with subcontractor selections.
  • Coordinate and assist with project hand-off meetings.
  • Participate in Pre-Construction services type work such as budgeting, design meetings, and value engineering services.
  • Assist and participate in presentations with clients.
  • Builds and maintains relationships with key subcontractors, suppliers, and clients.
  • Manages the collection and archiving of cost history, as well as the maintenance of the Estimating Software Database.
  • Evaluate industry cost trends.
  • Review, train, and manage work prepared by Project Estimators.

  • Review, train, and manage work prepared by Project Estimators.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS
  • The position reports to the Director of Preconstruction
  • Position indirectly reports to the Vice President of Preconstruction Services and Regional Leaders
    • Reasons for indirect reporting relationship: Coordination of estimating responsibilities and resource management
  • Directly reporting to this position are: None
  • Indirectly reporting to this position are Project Estimator, Estimator, Preconstruction Coordinator, Co-op/Intern, Project Manager, Project Superintendent, and Project Engineer
    • Reasons for indirect reporting relationship: Functional assignments as they relate to estimating various projects.

Education And Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in Civil or Mechanical Engineering or Construction Management.
  • 5 or more years of estimating experience in the construction industry.
Language Skills

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret complex documents. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

Computer Skills

Proficiency with office equipment, computers, and various PC software programs and knowledge of estimating software.

Other Skills

Well-organized, self-motivated, and able to proficiently perform duties with little supervisory guidance.

Certificates, Licenses and Registrations

Valid driver’s license with clean driving record. Motor Vehicle report required.
