Responsibilities

  • Provides daily work direction and guidance to Environmental Services team members.
  • Assigns, monitors, and reviews work activities to ensure completion and quality standards are met.
  • Assists with scheduling and staffing adjustments to meet operational needs.
  • Serves as a resource to employees and students by orienting, training, and coaching staff.
  • Assists leadership with employee onboarding, competency validation, staff development, and performance-related concerns.
  • Communicates departmental policies, procedures, and operational updates to staff.
  • Promotes employee engagement, teamwork, and positive morale.
  • Acts as liaison between Environmental Services, clinical staff, patients, visitors, and other departments.
  • Verifies completion of assigned duties and adherence to departmental procedures.
  • Conducts inspections of patient rooms, public areas, and high-touch surfaces to ensure cleanliness and compliance with infection prevention standards.
  • Coordinates department projects, room setups, and special cleaning activities.
  • Monitors bed tracking and assists with patient flow activities as assigned.
  • Responds to service requests, emergency cleanups, hazardous material spills, and disaster response activities.
  • Identifies opportunities for process improvement and communicates recommendations to leadership.
  • Reports safety concerns, equipment malfunctions, and facility issues promptly.
  • Performs all Environmental Services duties including: Cleaning patient rooms, treatment areas, offices, conference rooms, public spaces, elevators, stairwells, and restrooms.

Pay Range: $20.80 - $31.20

Major Responsibilities
Leadership and Staff Support
  • Provides daily work direction and guidance to Environmental Services team members.

Operations and Quality Assurance

Environmental Services Functions

Performs all Environmental Services duties including:

  • Cleaning patient rooms, treatment areas, offices, conference rooms, public spaces, elevators, stairwells, and restrooms.
  • Dusting, mopping, vacuuming, carpet care, floor refinishing, stripping, scrubbing, and burnishing.
  • Terminal cleaning and project cleaning throughout the facility.
  • Cleaning furniture, walls, ceilings, vents, windows, and fixtures.
  • Collecting and disposing of trash, recyclables, regulated medical waste, and hazardous waste in accordance with established procedures.
  • Cleaning and preparing discharge and transfer rooms and selected patient-care equipment.
  • Maintaining janitorial closets, carts, and equipment in clean and operational condition.
Supply and Equipment Management
  • Assists in training staff on cleaning equipment, supplies, and procedures.
  • Operates and monitors cleaning equipment including automatic scrubbers, carpet extractors, vacuums, compactors, and other department equipment.
  • Inspects equipment for safety, cleanliness, and proper operation.
  • Inventories, orders, stocks, and distributes cleaning supplies, paper products, linens, and other department materials.
  • Ensures chemicals are properly labeled and utilized according to manufacturer instructions and Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
Customer Service
  • Demonstrates exceptional customer service with patients, visitors, physicians, and team members.
  • Utilizes communication standards and service excellence practices in daily interactions.
  • Addresses concerns and complaints appropriately and escalates issues through the proper chain of command.
  • Maintains confidentiality of patient and organizational information.
  • Supports efforts to improve patient experience and customer satisfaction outcomes.
Education
  • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent preferred.
Experience
  • Minimum three (3) years of Environmental Services, housekeeping, or related experience required.
  • Previous lead, trainer, or supervisory experience preferred.
  • Healthcare Environmental Services experience preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of healthcare cleaning methods, infection prevention practices, and environmental services operations.
  • Ability to lead and motivate employees in a team environment.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to prioritize work and manage multiple responsibilities.
  • Knowledge of cleaning chemicals, equipment, and safety procedures.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment.
Licensure/Certification
  • No licensure or certification required.
  • Relevant environmental services, safety, or leadership certifications preferred.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and carry up to 30 pounds.
  • Ability to push and pull equipment and carts with or without assistance.
  • Frequent walking, standing, bending, stooping, kneeling, reaching, climbing stairs, and lifting.
  • Exposure to cleaning chemicals, infectious waste, bloodborne pathogens, soiled linen, and varying temperatures.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Ability to safely operate power cleaning equipment and ladders.
  • May be required to perform outdoor duties such as snow and ice control in designated areas.
