Job summary

Duke Energy in the Carolinas seeks a Lead Engineer for Steam Turbines to be the technical conscience of the fleet, applying mechanical engineering principles and data-driven methods. You will oversee outages, guide plant staff, coordinate with OEMs and vendors, and deliver reliable maintenance planning across multiple sites in the Carolinas.

This role requires a BS in engineering with PE, 8+ years in turbines or related fields; a Master's may substitute.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET-accredited program and a PE license is required; 8+ years related work experience.
  • A Master’s Degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree.
  • Experience with OSI PI Vision (or PI Process Book) and Microsoft Office is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provides expertise and guidance on complex problems in Steam Turbines and supporting systems, with long-term system-wide impact.
  • Coordinates with OEMs, vendors, planners and turbine specialists to prioritize maintenance.
  • Ensures outage planning, estimation, scheduling and monitoring to meet reliability goals.
  • Prepares technical reports, calculations and sketches; suggests process improvements and standards.
  • Maintains on-site engineering presence during outages and major events.
  • Engages in planning, research, root cause analysis and documentation to support availability and maintenance.
  • Keeps abreast of new developments and applies best practices to raise asset performance.

Turbine and Generator Services' (TGS) vision is to Optimize the reliability and cost of Regulated Renewable Energy's (RRE) centerline assets through data-driven technical solutions, collaboration and oversite.

The Steam Turbine team and TGS are committed to relentlessly and purposefully leveraging people, information, technology and analytical techniques to identify, address and prevent any issue that could contribute to a major centerline event. Steam Turbine Engineering is charged with accurately scoping outages and responding to emergent plant needs regarding their Steam Turbines, Steam Turbine Valves, or supporting system. We provide these stations with recommendations based on our expertise and historical data. The Steam Turbine Engineer is responsible for being the technical conscience of the fleet through the application of mechanical engineering principles and leveraging analytics to create data driven solutions.

The Lead Engineer is at the specialist level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees at this level are leaders. They solve complex problems, manage work, and develop innovative ways to streamline processes.Lead engineers are trusted to complete tasks with minimal supervision and increased latitude for un-reviewed work. They are also expected to have a fleet level impact while being responsible for assets in the Carolinas region.

Responsibilities
  • Provides expertise and guidance on the identification, analysis and resolution of complex problems in area of Steam Turbines and the supporting systems, with the ability tovisualize long-term impact on a system-wide basis.

  • Develops positive relationships and coordinate with many organizations and individuals to ensure major maintenance is prioritized and scheduled correctly based on historical data and existing technical issues. These groups include OEMs, venders, planners and turbine specialists.

  • Ensures achievement of business reliability and predictability goals through effective outage planning, estimation, scheduling and monitoring of work activities where only limited standardization exists; handles differing situations which require developing solutions within area of Steam Turbines and the supporting systems.

  • Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketches with the abilityto conduct analysis and recommend process enhancements and standards relative to area of assignment.

  • Provides a significant 'boots on the ground' engineering presence during planned or emergent outages and other noteworthy events or evolutions on the centerline assets.

  • When not directly supporting onsite work, the ST Engineer is engaged in planning, research, reviews, root cause analysis, documentation, etc. to support the availability, reliability, and major maintenance planning for these assets.

  • Possesses and applies a broad knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures; demonstrates ability to analyze and recommend enhancements to business processes and develops standards relevant to area of assignment. Keeps abreast of new developments, technologies, procedures and equipment.

Specific Actions
  • Provides onsite technical oversite of outage work where necessary.

  • Provides technical oversight at vendor shops for quality assurance.

  • Possesses and applies the fundamental concepts, principles, and procedures to show proficiency in technical and analytical competencies.

  • Maintains accurate records and files.

  • Monitors and analyzes computer trends for equipment health to influence future or current maintenance requirements.

Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program AND 8 years minimum required related work experience and a PE (Professional Engineer License)

  • A Master's Degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree.

  • Demonstrates advancing application of engineering theories and principles.

  • Demonstrates ability to work independently with minimal direction.

  • Demonstrates ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects at multiple locations.

  • Increasingly proficient in practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, preparing, and presenting recommendations.

  • Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds.

  • Experience using OSI PI Vision (or PI Process Book) and Microsoft Office software utilities

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Working Conditions
  • Field Mobility Classification - Work will be performed in various field locations, as needed, after the onboarding period. However, field employees are required to live within a reasonable daily commute to their assigned work location.

  • Perform work in a power plant or office environment.

  • Occasional overtime including nights, weekends and holidays if required.

  • Exposure to mechanical, electrical, noise or other industrial hazards, and utilize appropriate protective equipment as needed.
