Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville, NC seeks an ED Registration Specialist to support daily ED operations, register all patients, verify insurance, collect co-pays, and ensure accurate patient accounts.

Under supervision, you will create patient accounts within seconds of arrival, obtain demographics and insurance details, and provide courteous service in a busy emergency department environment. Experience in medical office or insurance is preferred.

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• College courses in Business/Medical Office Administration preferred.
• NAHAM CHAA certification preferred.
• Medical terminology knowledge required within 90 days of initial employment.

As appropriate, collects patient liabilities upon discharge from the emergency department.Major Job FunctionsThe following is a summary of the major essential functions of this job. In addition, specific functions may change from time to time:Under supervision, registers emergency service patients in a fast-paced environment, creating patient accounts within (90) seconds of patient’s arrival; allowing the clinical emergency department team to meet door to doctor goalsQueries EAD and enters accurate patient demographics into the computer system to obtain the correct patient medical record number and account numberResponsible for placing patient identification armbands on all Emergency Department patients after accounts are created, in order to ensure patient safetyObtain all demographic, guarantor, and insurance information and is to accurately document this information into the registration system and on any applicable formsFor patients being placed in observation or admission status, the ED Access Representative will obtain a physician order to support services renderedPerforms insurance eligibility/benefit verification, utilizing an EDI transaction and documenting information within the appropriate registration systemInforms patient/guarantor of their liabilities and collects appropriate patient co-payments, co-insurances, deductibles, and deposits at the point of dischargeEnsures integrity of patient accounts by working error reports daily, entering accurate data, and documenting all attempts made to collect and or obtain missing documentationProvides timely and continual coverage of assigned work area to offer prompt patient service and be available for all clinical partners registration needsAssists with the scheduling of staff to ensure proper coverage of the departmentOther duties as assignedMinimum QualificationsThe following qualifications, or equivalents, are the minimum requirements necessary to perform the essential functions of this job:Education and Formal Training:High school diploma or equivalent requiredCollege courses in Business, Medical Office Administration, Health Care Administration, and/or Computer Technology preferredPatient Access Specialist certification requiredNational Association Healthcare Access Management: Certified Healthcare Access Associate (NAHAM CHAA) certification preferredMedical terminology required within 90 days of initial employmentWork Experience:1 year insurance/clerical experience within a hospital or medical office setting preferredKnowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:Proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking the English languageKnowledge of insurance and collection of payments preferredKnowledge and experience with Microsoft windows requiredKnowledge of basic functionality of personal computerAbility to type and perform data entry functionsExcellent verbal and written communication skills requiredCustomer service skills to a variety of customersCritical thinking skills and ability to problem solve and multi-task requiredMulti-skilled with the ability to appropriately handle complexity and stress with the changing needs of the patients, families, visitors, and the Health SystemPhysical Requirements:Ability to communicate orally, see, and hear to collect informationDexterity to operate office equipmentSubject to eyestrain due to the many hours spent looking at a computer screenRequires sitting or standing in intervals for long periods of timeNoise level is low to moderateBends, reaches pushes and pulls file drawers to file records and reportsAbility to transport patients and assist with baggageRegularly lift or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift or move up to 50 poundsMay be required to periodically rotate shifts and regular days offRequired Licenses and CertificationsCape Fear Valley Health System is an Equal Opportunity Employer M/F/Disability/Veteran/Sexual Orientation/Gender Identity
