Job summary

WM is hiring for a WMHS Route Driver Lead to provide shift leadership, training, and coaching to ensure top‑tier service for clients while handling all customer document destruction needs. This role is the face of WMHS on the Operations team, upholding WMHS policies, standards, and values.

The position emphasizes supervising routes, safety, training new hires, ensuring paperwork accuracy, and effective communication with supervision for issue resolution.

Qualifications

  • 2 years of experience in driving commercial box trucks or route management.
  • Must be 21 years or older and have a valid driver's license.
  • All CMV/CDL drivers must be able to obtain a medical card.

Responsibilities

  • Manage assigned routes to ensure safe, timely waste pickup.
  • Transport waste safely according to federal, state, and local rules.
  • Plan daily schedule based on customer needs using provided paperwork.

I. Job Summary

The WMHS Route Driver Lead is responsible to provide shift leadership with guidance, training and coaching to ensure industry leading levels of service to our clients while taking care of all customer document destruction needs. The integrity of every Route Driver Lead is essential to maintaining goodwill and building new bonds of trust with our clients and serves as an example to other Route Drivers and is considered a developmental role for succession planning. The Route Driver Lead is a member of the Operations team and plays an integral role as the face of WMHS. The Route Driver Lead maintains WMHS policies, standards, and practices and ensures adherence to WMHS's Vision, Mission and Values.

II. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Manages assigned routes ensuring customers’ waste is picked up in a safe, timely and accurate manner
  • Pick up and transport waste safely according to all federal, state, and local rules and regulations
  • Plans daily schedule based on customers’ needs by reviewing daily paperwork, e.g., manifest, route sheets, previous VCR, etc. provided by the Transportation Manager/Supervisor or Dispatcher
  • May prepare and load trucks to service select accounts for the day, ensuring enough supplies are added
  • Loading and securing of waste or material or unloading truck at various WMHS and select customer accounts. Inventory and load of supplies needed each day
  • Pick up specified waste from each customer site scheduled for the day. Ensures customers have packaged and prepared waste according to all federal, state, and local rules and regulations before transporting
  • Provide the highest level of customer service to assigned accounts daily, communicating any issues to Transportation Manager/Supervisor or Dispatcher for resolution. This includes, but is not limited to re-routes, adjustments in container sizes, training, etc.
  • Ensures waste, supplies, and material handling equipment are secured prior to operating vehicle on public highway
  • Operates company equipment in a safe and efficient manner in an effort to minimize the risk of injury and equipment damage
  • Provides training, coaching and mentoring to fellow drivers and new hires
  • Ensures assigned paperwork is completed legibly, neatly, accurately, and completely and returned to Transportation Supervisor or Dispatcher for processing. Ensures DOT Driver Log is completed, if applicable
  • Communicates with WMHS Transportation Supervisor and/or Dispatcher regarding any change to route pickups, including address changes, customer not having waste ready for pickup, etc. Ensures that employee covering for specific route is aware of any situations outside the norm in order to provide the highest level of customer service. Reports any problems/issues with accounts to Transportation Supervisor and/or Dispatcher before the close of business each day
  • Performs pre-trip, post-trip checks, and driver check-in on assigned truck, prior to leaving or closing for the day. Reports any maintenance problems to Transportation Supervisor or Dispatcher for follow-up. Use of ELD (electronic logging device) and use of Geotab to log hours per DOT guidelines, when applicable
  • Complies with all local, state and federal laws governing driver fitness and hours of service.
  • Receives training, coaching and mentoring from Supervisor
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities, as assigned
III. Qualifications
A. Required Qualifications
  • 2 years of experience, preferably in driving commercial box trucks and route management
  • Must be age 21 or older
  • Valid Driver's License
  • All CMV/CDL drivers must be able to obtain a medical card by a certified medical examiner
B. Preferred Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED (accredited)

Field: This job operates in both inside garage, shop or gas plant conditions as well as in outside conditions that include inclement weather, heat and humidity.

This role is designated as safety sensitive and will require the successful candidate to strictly comply with all safety rules and protocols. As part of the ongoing employment requirements, the successful candidate may be subject to drug and alcohol testing—including pre‑employment screening, post‑incident evaluations, reasonable suspicion checks, and random testing, in accordance with government regulations and company policies.

Pay: The expected base pay rate for this position is $38.59 Per Hour Plus Overtime. This rate represents a good faith estimate for this position. The specific salary offered to a successful candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors, including the candidate's relevant experience, education, training, certifications, qualifications, and work location
