Job description

ABOUT VEG

In 2014, VEG was born with a mission to help people and their pets when they need it most. This meant challenging the status quo and fixing everything that was wrong with the ER experience. Since then, we've expanded rapidly, with hospitals nationwide open 24/7, 365 days a year, and created a better emergency experience—not only for people and their pets, but also for everyone who works here—our VEGgies!

At VEG we find a way to say yes to the career you want in veterinary emergency medicine. This means transforming how ER works, from our open-concept hospitals, where you can handle emergency cases of every kind (even exotics!) to our immersive, customer-focused experience, which helps us give people and their pets the care they deserve. This also means saying yes to creating the greatest experience possible for our VEGgies—yes to working in an environment where you feel valued, have the opportunity for learning and mentorship, and can make an impact.

THE JOB

As a Lead Emergency Veterinarian at VEG, you will take ownership of supporting your team and ensuring that your hospital is a model of clinical excellence. Working alongside your hospital's medical director, you’ll champion VEG's medical processes and initiatives, develop fellow doctors and coach them to thrive. You will lead by example, ensuring your team practices the VEG way with every case and provide guidance, resources, and encouragement for career growth. You’ll foster a culture of mentorship and learning while creating a lasting impact on your hospital.

WHAT YOU'LL DO
  • Work clinical shifts with responsibilities consistent with emergency doctors at your VEG:
    • Answer medical questions over the phone.
    • See patients right away as part of the VEG Triage and VEG Spikes, our customer-centered approach.
    • Diagnose each pet's condition to create a diagnostic and therapeutic plan.
    • Communicate diagnosis and treatment options directly with customers.
    • Provide appropriate treatments to address each pet's specific condition.
    • Create and review medical records to ensure accuracy.
    • Demonstrate the value of tests and treatments by speaking with the customer and addressing concerns.
  • Coach fellow doctors on medical excellence, the VEG Way, and customer-focused experience.
  • Support fellow doctors through their growth and development plans.
  • Assist the Medical Director (MD) when coverage is needed due to callouts or schedule changes.
  • Serve as interim MD when the current MD is on leave or opening a new VEG hospital.
  • Lead monthly doctor meetings and M&M rounds with guidance from the MD.
  • Teaching hospitals only: Own the New ER Doctor (NERD) training program and perform all NERD MD job duties.
  • Create doctor schedules, manage leave requests, and post schedules at least two months in advance.
  • Address customer complaints related to medical concerns.
WHAT YOU NEED
  • A DVM, VMD, or equivalent degree.
  • 2+ years of ER experience and critical case management.
  • One year of leadership experience is preferred, but not required.
  • Training in emergency surgery/endoscopy.
  • Flexible to work a combination of clinical and administrative shifts.
  • Ensure top-tier customer satisfaction and hospital revenue production.
  • Willingness to lead and support fellow doctors, and perform administrative tasks during off hours (e.g., callouts, customer complaints, scheduling).
  • Must be willing to work in a noisy environment with strong or unpleasant odors.
  • Availability to work nights, weekends, and holidays on a rotating or as-needed basis based on hospital needs.
  • Work well in a fast-paced environment with people from all backgrounds and personality types.
WHO YOU ARE
  • Empathetic, taking a people-centric approach, supporting colleagues and understanding different perspectives.
  • Humble, acknowledging mistakes, sharing credit, and lifting teammates' accomplishments.
  • Strong sense of ownership, taking responsibility for outcomes and staying committed to long-term results.
  • Curious, asking insightful questions and continually seeking learning opportunities.
HOW WE INVEST IN YOU
  • Competitive compensation, including base and 401K match.
  • Comprehensive health and wellness benefits starting on day one, including QPR training and access to free therapy or counseling.
  • Potential equity after one year of full-time, active employment with VEG.
  • Focus on learning and growth with VEG-created programs, unlimited ER CE, and travel stipends ($2,500/year for credentialed, $1,000/year for uncredentialed).
  • Clinical student loan repayment.
  • Paid parental leave up to 10 weeks at 100% pay, inclusive fertility and family-building care.
  • Flexible work schedules to support life outside of work.
  • Generous employee referral program.
  • Other perks: comfy scrubs, VEG swag, and fridge food.
