Job summary

Capital One National Association is seeking a Lead Data Engineer to drive data‑engineering initiatives and mentor teams. The role focuses on building scalable data platforms, collaborating across agile teams, and delivering cloud‑based solutions that enable financial empowerment for millions.

You’ll work with Java, Scala, Python, and SQL across big data stacks, with Redshift/Snowflake in a cloud environment, while championing best practices and performance tuning.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree required.
• At least 4 years of application development experience.
• At least 2 years of big data technologies.
• At least 1 year of cloud computing experience.
• 7+ years of application development including Python, SQL, Scala, or Java.
• 4+ years of experience with a public cloud (AWS, Azure, Google).
• 4+ years working with distributed data tools (MapReduce, Hadoop, Hive, Kafka, Spark).
• 4+ years of real-time data and streaming applications.
• 4+ years of NoSQL experience (Mongo, Cassandra).
• 4+ years of data warehousing experience (Redshift or Snowflake).
• 4+ years UNIX/Linux including shell scripting.
• 2+ years of Agile engineering practices.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with Agile teams to design, develop, test, and support full‑stack solutions.
• Work with developers experienced in ML, distributed microservices, and full‑stack systems.
• Use Java, Scala, Python and databases; leverage cloud data warehousing services like Redshift and Snowflake.
• Share passion for tech trends, experiment with new tools, and mentor engineering teammates.
• Partner with product managers to deliver cloud‑based solutions that empower users.
• Perform unit tests and code reviews to ensure well‑designed, efficient, and maintainable code.

Lead Data Engineer

What You’ll Do

• Collaborate with and across Agile teams to design, develop, test, implement, and support technical solutions in full‑stack development tools and technologies
• Work with a team of developers with deep experience in machine learning, distributed microservices, and full‑stack systems
• Utilize programming languages like Java, Scala, Python and open‑source RDBMS and NoSQL databases and cloud‑based data warehousing services such as Redshift and Snowflake
• Share your passion for staying on top of tech trends, experimenting with and learning new technologies, participating in internal and external technology communities, and mentoring other members of the engineering community
• Collaborate with digital product managers and deliver robust cloud‑based solutions that drive powerful experiences to help millions of Americans achieve financial empowerment
• Perform unit tests and conduct reviews with other team members to make sure your code is rigorously designed, elegantly coded, and effectively tuned for performance

Basic Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree
• At least 4 years of experience in application development (internship experience does not apply)
• At least 2 years of experience in big data technologies
• At least 1 year experience with cloud computing (AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud)

Preferred Qualifications

• 7+ years of experience in application development including Python, SQL, Scala, or Java
• 4+ years of experience with a public cloud (AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud)
• 4+ years experience with distributed data/computing tools (MapReduce, Hadoop, Hive, EMR, Kafka, Spark, Gurobi, or MySQL)
• 4+ year experience working on real‑time data and streaming applications
• 4+ years of experience with NoSQL implementation (Mongo, Cassandra)
• 4+ years of data warehousing experience (Redshift or Snowflake)
• 4+ years of experience with UNIX/Linux including basic commands and shell scripting
• 2+ years of experience with Agile engineering practices
• Experience leveraging interactive AI tooling to accelerate productivity, utilizing capabilities beyond basic code completion

Compensation

Wilmington, DE: $179,400 - $204,700 for Lead Data Engineer

McLean, VA: $197,300 - $225,100 for Lead Data Engineer

This role is also eligible to earn performance‑based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonus(es) and/or long‑term incentives (LTI). Incentives could be discretionary or non‑discretionary depending on the plan.
