Job summary

The Howard Center for Investigative Journalism at the University of Maryland seeks an Associate Director for Data & AI Investigations and Partnerships. The role leads data-driven investigations, builds collaborations with national outlets, and mentors students while integrating AI into reporting workflows.

Requires a bachelor’s degree and at least four years of professional journalism experience with data skills.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree and at least four years of post-college journalism experience.
• Experience producing investigative data journalism as a reporter.
• Experience managing investigative data journalism projects.
• Experience building or maintaining newsworthy data/document collections.
• Interest in AI methods and large language models for investigations.

Responsibilities

• Launch and manage a new initiative for data/document collections for journalists and researchers.
• Assist in establishing data-driven reporting collaborations with newsroom partners.
• Manage student-driven investigative data journalism projects with partners.
• Incorporate large language models and AI into investigative workflows.
• Oversee staff and fellows focusing on investigative data journalism.
• Teach one hands-on class per year tied to Howard Center data investigations.
