Job summary

REPORTS TO: Maintenance Supervisor

SUPERVISES: All Custodial Personnel

JOB GOAL:

To provide leadership and supervision for the district's custodial staff while ensuring all school buildings, interior facilities, entrances, sidewalks, and building access areas are maintained in a safe, clean, secure, attractive, and efficient condition. The Head Custodian serves as the day-to-day leader of custodial operations by directing custodial staff, maintaining high standards of cleanliness and safety, and working closely with the Maintenance Supervisor to provide exceptional learning environments for students, staff, and visitors.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Supervise, lead, train, schedule, evaluate, and hold accountable all custodial personnel to ensure consistent custodial standards are maintained throughout the district.
  2. Develop daily, weekly, seasonal, and annual custodial work schedules to ensure all assigned areas are maintained efficiently.
  3. Inspect classrooms, offices, hallways, cafeterias, kitchens, gyms, locker rooms, restrooms, entrances, sidewalks, and building access areas to ensure district cleanliness and safety standards are consistently met.
  4. Ensure sidewalks, entrances, and building access areas remain safe through snow removal, ice control, sweeping, and debris removal.
  5. Conduct routine quality inspections of custodial work and provide coaching, direction, and follow-up to maintain district expectations.
  6. Train new custodial employees on district procedures, equipment operation, cleaning methods, safety standards, and district expectations.
  7. Coordinate daily custodial assignments and adjust work schedules to provide adequate building coverage during employee absences.
  8. Maintain inventory of custodial supplies, cleaning chemicals, equipment, and materials. Communicate purchasing needs to the Maintenance Supervisor.
  9. Assist the Maintenance Supervisor with interviewing, hiring recommendations, onboarding, employee evaluations, disciplinary actions, improvement plans, and termination recommendations involving custodial personnel.
  10. Maintain documentation regarding employee performance, attendance, safety concerns, inspections, and custodial operations.
  11. Foster a positive, professional team environment built upon accountability, teamwork, customer service, and continuous improvement.
  12. Ensure all custodial staff comply with OSHA regulations, safety procedures, chemical handling requirements, and School Board policies.
  13. Respond to emergency custodial situations including spills, bodily fluids, flooding, weather-related issues, and other facility emergencies.
  14. Coordinate custodial support for athletic events, school programs, community events, meetings, and special activities, including facility setup and teardown.
  15. Perform custodial duties alongside staff whenever necessary to ensure district standards are maintained.
  16. Communicate regularly with principals, administrators, teachers, and the Maintenance Supervisor regarding custodial needs, building concerns, and operational issues.
  17. Identify maintenance issues beyond custodial responsibilities and promptly communicate repair needs to the Maintenance Supervisor.
  18. Ensure custodial equipment is properly maintained and report equipment repair or replacement needs.
  19. Assist with summer cleaning schedules, deep cleaning projects, floor refinishing, and preparation of buildings for each school year.
  20. Maintain professional communication using district radios and other communication systems.
  21. Maintain a professional appearance and promote positive relationships with students, staff, parents, and community members.
  22. Assist with grounds maintenance, exterior projects, and other Buildings and Grounds responsibilities when assigned by the Maintenance Supervisor.
  23. Regular, punctual attendance is expected.
  24. Shall adhere to the School Board policies and procedures.
  25. Perform such other duties as assigned by the Maintenance Supervisor or Superintendent.
SUPERVISORY REQUIREMENTS:

Directly supervises all custodial personnel. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with corporation policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include assigning work, scheduling employees, training staff, evaluating performance, recommending hiring, assisting with discipline, addressing complaints, resolving problems, and recommending termination when appropriate.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

High school diploma or equivalent required; previous custodial experience required; supervisory experience in custodial services, facilities management, or related field preferred; or any equivalent combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating instructions, manuals, and procedures. Ability to write reports and correspondence and communicate effectively with employees, administrators, vendors, and the public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to calculate measurements, inventory quantities, and perform basic mathematical calculations.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to solve practical problems, supervise employees, prioritize work, and interpret written, oral, diagram, or schedule instructions.

OTHER SKILLS:

Leadership, organizational, communication, training, customer service, and basic technology skills appropriate for district operations.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Physical demands are consistent with district custodial positions including standing, walking, lifting, climbing, operating equipment, and lifting up to 80 pounds occasionally.

CONTROLLED SUBSTANCES:

The employee shall remain free of alcohol or non-prescribed controlled substance use at school or any school function and throughout employment in the Corporation.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work is performed primarily inside school buildings with regular responsibilities outdoors maintaining sidewalks and entrances. Occasional exterior assignments may be directed by the Maintenance Supervisor.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

This is an at-will, twelve-month position. Salary and workdays to be determined by the School Board.

EVALUATION:

Performance of this job will be evaluated by the Maintenance Supervisor in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on evaluation of classified personnel.
