Job summary

Stord is seeking a highly technical, hands-on Sr Controls & Automation Engineer to serve as lead systems architect within our core innovation team at the HQ in Atlanta. You will own the technical design, integration, and orchestration of advanced automation in live fulfillment environments.

You will evaluate, install, and prototype robotics and controls technologies, drive rapid experimentation, and ensure data flow across PLC, WCS, and WMS layers to scale across facilities.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Industrial Automation, or related field.
• 8+ years of hands-on experience in high-volume manufacturing or warehouse automation.
• Expert-level PLC programming (Allen-Bradley, Siemens), HMI development, and industrial networking (EtherNet/IP, Profinet).
• Proven ownership of multi-million-dollar automation projects from architecture through commissioning.
• Strong ability to document technical findings, experiments, and system learnings.
• Ability to travel domestically 25% annually.

Responsibilities

• Define control systems architecture and integration roadmaps connecting frontier robotics with internal software ecosystem.
• Vendor Evaluation & Strategic Selection: Partner with lab leadership to evaluate and validate automation providers and select long-term partners.
• Systems Integration & Orchestration: Lead integration of mobile robotics, picking systems, and sortation technologies; ensure data flow across PLC, WCS, and WMS.
• Lab-to-Production Scale: Develop deployment frameworks, standards, and operational documentation for scalable environments.
• Robotics & Automation Evaluation: Assess AMRs, robotic picking, G2P, and sortation for reliability and ROI.
• Rapid Prototyping & Experimental Design: Lead high-iteration test environments and data-driven decision making.
• Controls Systems Engineering: Act as SME for PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, servo systems; maintain code libraries and schematics.
• Performance Validation & Root Cause Analysis: Evaluate readiness and conduct RCA to resolve integration challenges.
