Job summary

Overview

GAI Consultants, a national multi-disciplinary engineering firm, is hiring a Construction Technician (Transportation Construction Inspector) for projects in District 11 for the 2025 season. This position will be based out of GAI's Cranberry, PA office.

Responsibilities
  • Ensure compliance with the contract documents by the contractor.
  • Consult with contractors, consultants, engineers, job superintendents, and others on plans, specifications, materials, equipment, and the methods, practices and safety precautions involved in construction and installation of the work.
  • Prepare daily progress reports and maintain progress schedules.
  • Check shop drawings and contractors' quotations for variation.
  • Maintain records of quantities and cost of materials used.
  • Prepare contractors' periodic progress payment claims and recommend payment.
  • Travel as required related to duties or as directed by supervisor.
  • Provide a positive attitude to establish competence and pride in the company.
  • Perform other duties commensurate with the position as required.
  • Review plans and specifications in preparation for field observations on construction sites.
  • Conduct tests and investigations in the field or laboratory to obtain data used by engineering and technical personnel in determining physical properties of construction materials.
  • Collect soil, asphalt and concrete samples, prepare samples for testing, record data, and prepare summary reports.
  • Document field activities, observations, and testing results on projects.
  • Perform laboratory and field tests according to prescribed procedures, processes and standards.
  • Use specialized equipment and apparatus to prepare analyses, reports and/or technical drawings.
  • Communicate field and laboratory testing results with staff, contractors, and clients.
  • May lead projects and tasks.
  • Can work independently or lead crews when necessary.
  • Possess effective oral and written communication skills; interact well with staff and clients, motivate others, and work positively in a team environment.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English and perform basic math computations for length, area, and volume.
  • Minimum of one (1) year PennDOT experience or higher, or minimum of two (2) years of transportation, highway, or bridge construction inspection experience.
  • Four (4) years of highway or bridge construction, non-highway or bridge inspection, or highway or bridge design experience, and non-inspection personnel must complete twelve (12) web-based TCI training modules to substitute for other required experience.
  • Civil Engineering or Construction degree can substitute for needed experience.
  • Bachelor’s of Science degree in a non-Civil Engineering field with completion of the twelve (12) web-based TCI training modules can substitute for needed experience.
Certifications (Preferred)
  • NICET Level 2 or higher in Transportation/Highway Construction
  • NECEPT Bituminous field certification
  • ACI/PennDOT Concrete field technician certification
  • PennDOT/PTC CDS certification
  • ECMS experience
  • OSHA 10-Hour certification
General Characteristics
  • Develops advanced field operations skills; possesses computer skills, good visual and hearing abilities, follows procedures; good organizational skills; works in varying weather conditions; safety-conscious; flexible with work hours and travel up to 100% during weekdays and occasional weekend travel; capable of physically demanding work; able to lift and carry between 25 and 50 lbs and walk for extended periods.
