This requires us to deliver on our promises and always look for new opportunities to grow, both ourselves and our business.

Job Purpose

The Control & Integration (C&I) Department at National Grid supports the Substation, Transmission and Distribution departments with capital project engineering and design. We support multiple projects by engineering SCADA solutions and network designs for system devices to communicate with each other and communicate with our transmission and regional operation control centers. We provide the ability for our control centers to see and record metering data, device status and elements, device health, and allow for the remote control of substation equipment.

Our group specifies the required equipment that we use for the substation controls and provides network diagrams and configuration sheets for our technicians to configure the devices. This work is done in the form of preliminary engineering, where our specifications and devices are provided for design. We provide detailed design review of engineered drawings that are developed by substation designers. We also supply network mapping and HMI configurations for digital substations.

The lead engineer position will provide software configuration and troubleshooting support for technicians when required.

As a lead engineer, you will also be given leadership roles that involve working with engineering/design firms to provide additional resources to our group. You will oversee program work and have the ability to train and help organize training of our internal engineers on standards and methods of work.

Key Accountabilities

  • Perform controls engineering for electric transmission and distribution substations and customer sites for control, metering, and instrumentation projects.
  • Develop and document substation communication topology/architecture.
  • Develop dataflow mapping for IEC61850 project configuration.
  • Prepare list of control, status, and metering points used for Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) and associated scaling instructions.
  • Develop requirements for the operation of Remote Terminal Units (RTUs), Digital Display Meters (DDMs), revenue meters, annunciators, communication processors, control switch relays, and connections to other Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs) in electrical substations.
  • Provide network mapping configurations for digital substation relays and station controllers.
  • Prepare control & integration equipment lists including part numbers.
  • Implement QA/QC for project deliverables.
  • Provide technical leadership on a multi-disciplined project team.
  • Prepare written reports detailing engineering recommendations.
  • Coordinate with design consultants and internal design staff.
  • Review drawings associated with projects, including manufacturers’ equipment.
  • Manage consultants’ work, ensuring compliance and technical adequacy against approved standards.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant regulatory requirements such as cyber security (NERC-CIP).
  • Develop subject matter expertise with commonly used control, metering, and instrumentation equipment.
  • Support operations personnel to troubleshoot problems related to substation control, metering and/or instrumentation systems.
  • Support storm restoration efforts in a field role as needed or required.
  • Support onboarding and training of new C&I engineer personnel.
  • Training support for external engineer / design firms to function as additional project resources.

Supervisory/Interpersonal- Experience Required

  • Able to motivate, counsel, coach, and develop direct reports and others.
  • Experience establishing clearly defined goals and standards of employee performance.

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor of Science in Electrical or Computer Engineering from an ABET accredited engineering program with a preference for power coursework/concentration.
  • Familiarity with common utility communication standards and protocols such as serial RS232/485, Distributed Network Protocol (DNP3) and IEC61850.
  • Proficiency with TCP/IP, UDP, and Ethernet protocols, and network engineering concepts preferred.
  • Familiarity with IEC 61850 Goose Messaging and Sampled Values, a plus.
  • Ability to read electrical schematics and a working knowledge of the devices represented on typical utility substation schematics.
  • Knowledge of utility 3-phase AC systems and DC systems.
