Job summary

Legent Health in Houston, TX, is seeking a Lead Certified Surgical Tech to support the surgical team under the supervision of a surgeon. You will help ensure a safe operating room, proper instrument function, and optimal conditions for invasive procedures.

This role requires at least two years of surgical technology experience, the ability to mentor others, strong communication with physicians and staff, and a calm, organized approach to fast-paced cases.

Qualifications

  • Two years of experience as a surgical technologist or competency in two or more specialty areas.
  • Ability to work under stress and adapt to rapid changes.
  • Detail-oriented with a focus on accuracy and patient safety.
  • Effective communication with physicians, staff and patients’ families.
  • Knowledge of perioperative patient care concepts.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with surgeons, OR leads and managers on daily operations.

  • Liaise with team leads, sales reps and materials management for equipment.
  • Contact vendors for supplies and instrument needs.
  • Coordinate with Sterile Processing to ensure instrument accuracy.
  • Assist with schedule coordination and daily duties with charge RN.
  • Ensure preference cards are correct and case postings are accurate.
  • Mentor and teach new surgical technologists and rotating RNs.

About the Role

The Lead Surgical Technologists is an allied health professional, who are an integral part of the team of medical practitioners providing surgical care to patients. The Lead Surgical Tech work under the supervision of a surgeon to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures, ensuring that the operating room environment is safe, that equipment functions properly, and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety. This Lead Surgical Tech shall possess expertise in the theory and application of sterile and aseptic technique and combine the knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and implementation tools and technologies to facilitate a physician's performance of invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures.

POSITION’S ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Works closely with surgeons, OR Team Leads and Clinical Managers on day-to-day operations.
  • Coordinates/collaborates with department educator to develop staff development plans for unit.
  • Coordinate with service specific team lead, sales representatives and OR materials management for specialty equipment, implants, instruments, and supplies.
  • Coordinates with materials to contact vendors regarding supplies, instrumentation, and needs of cases.
  • Coordinates with Sterile Processing Department to ensure accuracy of instruments, appropriate instrumentation allocation, and priority processing of instruments needed for procedures.
  • Works with charge RN for schedule coordination, staffing assignments, daily duties, and rotations.
  • Ensuring that all preference cards are correct and up to date.
  • Verify accuracy of case postings.
  • Verify cases have been pulled and accuracy of case pulls.
  • Verify equipment needs for cases.
  • Verify room setup.
  • Mentor and teach new surgical technologists to the Operating Room and RNs rotating through a specialty (within the scrub role.
  • Acts as a resource for staff daily.
  • All other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Two (2) years of experience as a surgical technologist and/or has demonstrated competency in two (2) or more specialty areas.
  • Demonstrates initiative, flexibility, and dependability; must be able to work under stress and pressure due to rapid changes in work conditions.
  • Has the ability to remain calm, even under the most stressful of situations.
  • Ability to handle confidential information in a discreet, professional manner.
  • Must be detailed-oriented; accuracy is imperative.
  • Ability to meet deadline; customer focused.
  • Knowledge and ability to communicate effectively with physicians, Medical Center staff and/or patients and their families.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and practice of perioperative patient care concepts.
  • Good organization and coordination skills.
  • Ability to process and follow-up on rush items.
  • Ability to be an effective team member and display initiative.
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
  • Basic computer skills.
