City of Grand Rapids seeks a lead Groundskeeper to supervise cemetery and grounds operations, including interments, marker installations, sod, irrigation, and equipment maintenance. You will coordinate grave maintenance, manage seasonal staff, and ensure safe, compliant practices across parks and cemeteries.

The role requires a High School diploma with five years' groundskeeping experience, CDL with air-brake, and multiple equipment certifications; compensation includes medical benefits and 401a

Qualifications

• High School diploma and five years of grounds keeping experience or equivalent.
• CDL with air brake endorsement required at time of hire.
• Additional equipment training (Backhoe/Tractor/Mower/Bobcat/Forklift) within six months.
• Pesticide applicator certification preferred.

Responsibilities

• Supervises seasonal maintenance staff; assigns work and monitors performance.
• Maintains cemeteries and grounds: mowing, watering, fertilizing, disease/insect checks.
• Operates irrigation systems; checks for leaks and adjusts heads.
• Digs graves, sets up equipment for burial services, and maintains facilities.
• Performs preventive maintenance on equipment and facilities.
• Picks up debris; maintains parks and playgrounds; paints and repairs as needed.
• Enforces cemetery rules; answers public inquiries; handles plot sales and fees.
• Maintains records and supports cost estimates for grounds improvements.
