Job summary

Scholastic Book Fairs is seeking a Lead Driver to support our local distribution team in Strongsville, OH. This full-time role involves directing daily distribution activities, coordinating dispatch for CDL drivers, and ensuring compliance with DOT and company policies.

You will monitor driver performance, work with the Branch Manager and NTS on routing, and train drivers on safety and proper customer delivery presentation.

Qualifications

• Must possess valid CDL license with air brake endorsement (Class A or B).
• Minimum one year verifiable commercial driving experience.
• Lead or supervisory experience preferred.
• Must pass drug/alcohol screen, MV-LED review, background check and a DOT physical.

Responsibilities

• Monitor driver performance to maintain productivity and adherence to procedures.
• Coordinate dispatching of CDL drivers for deliveries and pickups using CIS or OTM systems.
• Communicate routing changes with NTS and ensure deliveries are updated accordingly.
• Monitor fleet PMs and repairs; adjust schedules for emergencies and incidents.
• Assist interviewing drivers and completing ride-alongs/performance evaluations.
• Train CDL drivers on safety, uniform, delivery presentation, and damage-free handling.

We are currently in search of Lead Driver to assist our local distribution team. This full-time position offers medical, dental and vision benefits, Paid Time Off, a generous 50% off discount on Scholastic merchandise, and a 401k.

Qualified candidates will be able to plan, schedule, direct and execute the day-to-day distribution activities of a branch in the Book Fair Organization. Evaluate and asses the team to ensure adherence to company standards and policies, and optimal performance. This candidate will support our mission to encourage reading and promote lifelong learning and demonstrate our values of caring and respect for all people.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Monitor performance of all drivers to ensure that maximum productivity and performance levels are maintained and all driver procedures are being followed.

Work with the Branch Manager (BM) / Warehouse Supervisor (WS) to perform duties as Branch Fleet Dispatcher to coordinate dispatching of all CDL drivers to accomplish scheduled deliveries and pick-ups using either the legacy CIS system or the new OTM (Oracle Transportation Management) System.

Communicate with National Transportation Specialists (NTS) to implement all approved schedule changes. Coordinate changes within the branch to ensure all changed deliveries and pick-ups occur.

Monitor fleet reports to ensure all PM’s and repairs are performed as scheduled.

Work with the Branch Manager and NTS to implement emergency schedule changes due to unforeseen events such as accidents, injuries, breakdowns, late routes, etc.

Effectively communicate necessary routing information to assist NTS with routing improvements and driver feedback.

Act as reserve DOT driver, to be used in all cases when necessary, during peak times, or in any emergency. Adhere to all Company, local, state and federal rules/regulations inclusive of, but not limited to DOT, OSHA, and EEOC.

Assist the Branch Manager in interviewing all prospective drivers and the completion of driver ride-along/performance evaluations.

Train CDL Drivers in company procedures, to include but not limited to, proper safety precautions, acceptable uniform wear, proper verbal delivery presentation to customer, and how to receive a “damage free” book fair.

Review for accuracy: trip sheets, fuel tickets, road expenses, any driver DOT logbooks, and other paperwork, etc. prior to forwarding them to the Branch Manager. Provide feedback to drivers in order to promote improved accuracy and completeness of documents.

High School Diploma or GED Certificate preferred.

Verifiable commercial driving experience of at least one (1) year required.

Minimum of twenty-one (21) years of age.

Possess valid CDL license with air brake endorsement (Class A or B).

Previous Lead role or Supervisory experience is preferred.

Must pass a drug screen/alcohol screen, Motor Vehicle Record review, criminal background review, and a DOT physical examination indicating physical essential functions of job can be performed as required.

Must be able to drive vehicle weighing up to 34,000 GVW.

Ability to lift/carry up to 70 lbs., push and pull aluminum cases weighing more than 350 lbs. on a regular and repetitive basis. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Must be able to operate a truck onboard computer, a personal computer, and follow GPS directions.

Ability to work overtime and weekends as needed.
