Job description

Lead High-End Remodeling Projects in Greater Boston

Company: Out of the Woods Construction

Location: Waltham, Massachusetts, with daily travel to residential project sites throughout the Greater Boston area

Employment Type: Full-time

Compensation: $35.00–$45.00 per hour, based on experience and demonstrated project-management capability

Required License: Active Massachusetts Construction Supervisor License

Project Focus: High-end residential remodeling, additions, kitchens, bathrooms, and renovations of older New England homes

The Opportunity

Out of the Woods Construction is seeking an experienced Lead Carpenter who can take ownership of residential remodeling projects while remaining actively involved in the work.

This is not a position where you will simply supervise a large crew from the sidelines. Depending on the size and complexity of the project, you may spend most of your day performing carpentry, coordinating subcontractors, managing the schedule, or communicating with the homeowner.

On a smaller bathroom or deck project, the role may be primarily hands-on. On a large addition or whole-home renovation, the role may be focused more heavily on site leadership, scheduling, trade coordination, quality control, and client communication.

You will be trusted to run organized, professional projects in occupied homes while maintaining Out of the Woods Construction’s standards for craftsmanship, communication, cleanliness, and follow-through.

What You Will Do
  • Take day-to-day ownership of residential remodeling projects from site mobilization through final completion.
  • Serve as the primary on-site point of contact for homeowners, trade partners, and the internal production team.
  • Perform hands‑on rough and finish carpentry based on the needs and size of each project.
  • Coordinate subcontractors, deliveries, inspections, materials, equipment, and daily site logistics.
  • Review approved plans, project scopes, schedules, selections, and site conditions before and during construction.
  • Identify potential field conflicts early and communicate recommended solutions before they affect schedule, quality, or cost.
  • Work effectively in older New England homes where walls, floors, framing, and finishes may not be level, square, or built using modern methods.
  • Develop practical solutions that create flat, visually correct, structurally sound finished work without unnecessarily disturbing historic conditions.
  • Maintain safe, clean, organized, and professional jobsites, especially in occupied homes.
  • Communicate project progress, upcoming activities, access requirements, and emerging concerns clearly to homeowners.
  • Address homeowner questions professionally while following the company’s approval and change‑order process.
  • Hold trade partners accountable for workmanship, cleanliness, schedule commitments, and project standards.
  • Track time, tasks, photos, notes, and project updates accurately in JobTread.
  • Coordinate with production management when additional labor, materials, technical guidance, or scheduling support is needed.
  • Complete punch‑list and closeout work to a high standard.
  • Participate in project debriefs and share lessons that can improve future estimating, planning, and production.
Required Qualifications
  • Active Massachusetts Construction Supervisor License.
  • Demonstrated experience leading residential remodeling projects or serving as a working foreman, site supervisor, or lead carpenter.
  • Strong hands‑on carpentry skills across multiple phases of residential renovation.
  • Experience coordinating subcontractors and managing day‑to‑day jobsite activity.
  • Ability to read and interpret residential plans, specifications, scopes of work, and construction details.
  • Strong understanding of residential construction sequencing.
  • Ability to identify hidden conditions, field conflicts, and practical solutions in older homes.
  • Professional communication skills and confidence interacting directly with homeowners.
  • Ability to manage projects independently while knowing when to involve production management.
  • Strong organization, documentation, and follow‑through.
  • Comfortable using construction technology, mobile applications, and project‑management software.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Reliable vehicle capable of transporting personal tools and traveling between project sites.
  • Personal hand tools appropriate for residential carpentry.
  • Ability to travel daily to project sites throughout the Greater Boston service area.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Eight or more years of residential carpentry or remodeling experience.
  • Experience renovating older or historic New England homes.
  • Experience managing projects ranging from bathrooms and kitchens to additions and whole‑home renovations.
  • Experience working in occupied, high‑end residential environments.
  • Advanced rough and finish carpentry experience.
  • Experience coordinating mechanical, electrical, plumbing, framing, drywall, flooring, cabinetry, and finish trades.
  • Experience using JobTread or a similar construction‑management platform.
  • Experience towing a job trailer or coordinating constrained urban jobsite logistics.
  • High school diploma, GED, trade‑school education, or equivalent field experience.
What Success Looks Like

A successful Lead Carpenter at Out of the Woods Construction:

  • Maintains steady project momentum without sacrificing quality.
  • Creates an organized and professional homeowner experience.
  • Communicates problems early instead of allowing surprises to grow.
  • Keeps trade partners, materials, and project activities coordinated.
  • Produces high‑quality work in homes where existing conditions are rarely straightforward.
  • Uses company systems consistently.
  • Accepts feedback and follows established processes.
  • Can independently manage increasingly complex projects as trust and experience grow.

New Lead Carpenters are generally introduced to Out of the Woods Construction’s systems and standards through smaller projects before being assigned larger or more complex renovations.
