Job description

Veritas Custom Homes | Raleigh / Wake Forest, NC | Full-Time

Reports To: Project Manager

ABOUT THE ROLE

Veritas Custom Homes is a residential design-build remodeling company committed to doing excellent work and treating people well. We're looking for a Lead Carpenter to run the day to day operation of our remodeling projects, the person who owns what happens on the jobsite from the pre-construction handoff through the final walkthrough. This is not primarily a production carpentry position, but you should be skilled enough in the field to do the work well enough to judge whether someone else has. Working under the direction of the Project Manager, you make the field decisions that keep the job on schedule, on budget, and moving, and escape the ones that need to go higher.

WHAT YOU'LL OWN
The Schedule
  • Own the project schedule in the field: know what's happening today, what's happening next week, and what has to be confirmed to protect both
  • Participate in the pre-construction handoff and walk the job before it starts so there are no surprises on day one
  • Identify potential delays before they happen and bring solutions, not just notice
The Client Experience
  • Serve as the client's primary daily point of contact on site; the homeowner should know your name, trust your word, and come to you first
  • Recognize when a request falls outside contracted scope, stop before performing the work, and route it to the Project Manager as a change order
  • Protect the client's home like it's your own: flooring, furniture, landscaping, pets, and privacy
Trade Partners & Job Cost
  • Coordinate and direct the subcontractors on your site, confirming them a day ahead and ensuring each has the access, materials, and conditions needed to perform
  • Walk each trade's work before they leave, address issues while the crew is still there, and prepare the site for the next trade
  • Work to a labor and materials budget: track hours and purchases against the estimate and flag variance as soon as you see it developing
  • Receive, verify, and organize material deliveries against plans and purchase orders, and document field conditions and scope changes with photos and notes the same day
Quality, Safety & Closeout
  • Work from plans, specifications, and selection sheets, and catch conflicts between them before they get built
  • Monitor workmanship across all trades and catch quality issues early, while they're still cheap to fix
  • Maintain a clean, safe, organized jobsite, and own the punch list as the job runs, managing the final walkthrough and warranty items to completion
CARPENTRY & HANDS-ON WORK

You should be a capable, well-rounded remodeling carpenter, someone who can do the work well enough to judge whether someone else has. Typical hands-on work includes:

  • Selective demolition in occupied homes: opening walls carefully, identifying what's structural, and protecting what stays
  • Rough framing and structural work, including walls, floor systems, headers, beams, temporary shoring, and blocking for cabinets, tile, and grab bars
  • Window and exterior door installation, including flashing and weather detailing
  • Interior doors, hardware, and finish trim: base, casing, crown, built-ins, stair parts, and other millwork
  • Cabinet setting, countertop coordination, and shimming and scribing to out-of-square existing conditions
  • Substrate and underlayment prep for tile and flooring, and repairs where new work meets old, matching existing profiles, plane, and reveal
  • Accurate layout and measurement, safe use of tools, ladders, and scaffolding, and the judgment to balance hands-on production with running the job
WHO WE'RE LOOKING FOR

Someone who knows residential construction and takes ownership. The right person doesn't walk past a problem because "that's somebody else's job." They notice it, communicate it, and get it resolved. You should:

  • Have solid residential construction and remodeling experience, ideally in occupied homes, with the sequence of construction second nature
  • Be able to direct subcontractors and hold professional adults accountable without creating conflict
  • Be genuinely comfortable talking with homeowners daily; this role is as much communication as construction
  • Read plans and specifications and work to a budget of hours and materials
  • Be organized enough to run paperwork, photos, and logs daily without being chased for them
  • Be dependable and proactive, and hold a valid driver's license with reliable transportation between jobsites

Nice to have, not required: OSHA 10 or 30, First Aid/CPR, lead-safe (RRP) certification, and experience with construction management software.

OUR VALUES

At Veritas, how we do the work matters just as much as the work itself.

Fair & Honest: We tell the truth, communicate clearly, and do what we say we are going to do.

Others Oriented: We treat homeowners, teammates, subcontractors, and vendors with respect and look for ways to serve them.

Always Improving: We stay teachable and look for better ways to build, communicate, organize, and lead.

WHAT TO EXPECT

This role is based on active residential construction jobsites, most of them occupied homes, and requires the ability to walk, stand, climb, bend, kneel, and lift construction materials in varied indoor and outdoor conditions. Compensation is competitive based on experience and ability, with room to grow into greater responsibility as you demonstrate command of the jobsite.

READY TO JOIN OUR TEAM?

If you're an experienced residential construction professional who wants to run the jobsite, coordinating people, protecting the schedule and the budget, taking care of the client, and occasionally putting on the tool belt to get something across the finish line, we'd like to talk with you.
